Atlas Paving Way For Bigger Satellites
Washington D C upi scientists report two way radio contacts with the four ton Atlas satellite demonstrate the reliability of a space relay station. Tests planned as the satellite completes its fifth orbit and remaining life expectancy aims to pave way for larger, more instrumented spacecraft. An Army engineer telephoned the satellite from Ft Monmouth and relayed the message via Corona California and Ft Sam Houston Texas to record near perfect transmissions on the Atlas pass.

A butane gas truck exploded during a crowd of about 500 in Brownfield Texas killing four people and injuring 168.
