Prizes will be awarded at the Chamber of Commerce office at Me Wednesday.

Winter Storm Hits Northern New Mexico Snow Closes Roads
Winter weather swept northern New Mexico with snow and rain disrupting travel. Farmington reported half an inch moisture, Chama seven inches accumulated, and Cuba six inches with chains needed. Rock falls on US 64 near Taos and highway crews cleared several inches on the Los Alamos road. Highs ranged from 37 to 62 across cities, with continued clouds and showers expected through Wednesday night. Ski bases formed at La Madera and Santa Fe ski basin.

The Department of Agriculture has rescinded the skip-row cotton planting regulation after Lovington farmers protested. Joe Peterson of the Lovington ASC says Washington telegram confirms the change, which would have charged farmers the full 160 acres under a two by four skip-row pattern. Farmers argued skip-row aids moisture use wind erosion control weed suppression and disease management, and Peterson called the victory a rare chance to express public opinion.

City Man From Lovington to Receive Seminary Degree
Lovington native Deene Campbell, son of Mr and Mrs Y Newt Campbell, will graduate at Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary Fort Worth during the mid winter commencement January 17 at 7 30 p m. He earned a bachelor of arts degree from Hardin Simmons University in 1947 and is slated to receive a master of religious education. Dr Evan Allard Reiff president of Hardin Simmons University will deliver the address in Truett Auditorium on the seminary campus.

The Abo Reef discovery by Carper Drilling Co and partners reached total depth of 10 015 feet and yielded multiple drillstem tests with oil shows and mud returns. The NE NW Section 31-lis Ze 354% miles SE of Mallamar, 22 miles west of Abo Lev ington, and 30 miles east of Empire Abo production marks a new focus for regional drilling. The Carper block, 1288 acres, includes partners Kewanee Oil Phillips Petroleum and others, with plans for continuous development and a second test location. A second wildcat near SW Section 35 17s 33e and a British American OW Production Co No 1 Pluma Unit are noted. The Empire Abo pool has produced 70 wells since 1957, with 9 drilled in 1966.
