Two Australians visiting Lovington to bid on pipeline work for Southern Union Gas said Brisbane heat at over 100 degrees contrasts with Lovington’s 15 degree chill. They observed Project sites, watched local methods, enjoyed wide highways, and noted planned road expansion as they shopped for Christmas before returning home.
President Johnson and South Vietnam’s Nguyen Van Thieu held a dinner meeting in Canberra and issued a joint statement backing informal talks with National Liberation Front members while rejecting its status as an independent group. Johnson said a settlement could come quickly if Thieu’s informal talks proceed and if the NLF accepts prior accords and a one vote plan under the current government.
Lovington resident H C Pannell announces resignation as president of New Mexico Junior College NMIC effective July 1. He will depart after leading the institution through years of growth and changes.
A 1956 Mercury wrecked after a Main and Monroe collision at 7 11 pm. Driver Jimmy Griffin, 29, was treated and released from Lovington Sea General Hospital. Police say he passed out, no skid marks observed, Griffin cited for careless driving while awaiting retirement plans.
Lea County rotary rigs climb to 37 last week after a low of 35, rebounding from a year high of 44. Reed Roller Bit reports 37 rigs drilling in the Permian Basin area, up two from the prior week.
Los Angeles resident Edgar Eugene Bradley, 49, is charged by Jim Garrison's office with conspiring to murder President Kennedy. An arrest warrant sets bond at 10000, with extradition to Louisiana likely. Bradley denies involvement and is connected to Rev. Carl McIntire's group.
Helicopters extended food and medical aid to outlying Navajo communities along the Colorado River near Grand Canyon. Officials reported 17 000 to 20 000 people in the western edge area, with hospitals near capacity and several deaths from storms. Trucks blocked by snow delayed large aid consignments. airlifts and hay drops continued to reach hardest hit sectors.
Elroy and Leroy Nez are one day old and healthy after a home birth in a hogan on the Navajo Reservation. The mother Amy Nez hemorrhaged and was flown to Fort Defiance after delivery with the great-grandmother assisting. The helicopter stopped to pick up the newborns and aid crew, and the family near Chinle prepared for care at a Public Health Service hospital. The twins weighed six pounds two ounces and four pounds fifteen ounces, one incubated. The great-mother delivered with cord tied by string. The name choices came from the helicopter crew. The scene included other children and ongoing snow storms in the region.
The forecast calls for light snow or light rain through today into tonight with clearing later. Frigid tonight with lows around 26 and highs near 52. Cloudiness fades, with scattered snow flurries in mountains and east New Mexico and a chance of light rain in east and south areas. Friday should be fair with slight warming. Lows tonight near zero in high valleys, 10 to 25 elsewhere, highs Friday 35 to 45 north and 27 to 52 south.
Lovington High School Band and Choir present a rescheduled Christmas program at Parnell Auditorium starting at 7 30. The A Cappella Choir sings Messiah and Soloists include Randy Bolding Orin Flynn Jimmy Ellis Carol Waits Janis Holt Becky Brinkley. Concert Band performs Gloria Jesu Joy of Man's Desiring and other pieces under J D Fry and Carol Brashear.
