City commissioners opened bids for pipe and equipment purchases and authorized two new police cars. They bought pipe, a cleaning machine, a test bench, and about 350 water meters with various sizes. Unbudgeted income from a farming program was redirected to the police for two vehicles, while the farming allotment was returned to the county ASC.
Mrs J R Smith mother of Dr Robert E Smith was admitted to Methodist Memorial Hospital in Lubbock Saturday after a heart attack at her home 513 West Adams Avenue She is reported as doing as well as can be expected though visitors are not allowed.
The New Mexico Highway Commission met to discuss the proposed access road to the Gasbuggy site in northwest New Mexico. Chairman John Sudderth and several officials faced fraud indictments from a Santa Fe grand jury, though no mention of the charges occurred in early meeting hours. Sen. Joseph Montoya was scheduled to speak. the reason was not disclosed. The commission also set a new limit on an unspecified matter as part of Highway Page 8 coverage.
The Leader will deliver both Friday and Sunday issues simultaneously. Friday’s edition is a standard weekday issue while Sunday’s is an all Christmas edition focusing on features and pictures. Advertisers have bought space for Christmas wishes, and offices will close Friday afternoon returning Monday morning.
Gov elect David F. Cargo announced Albert T. Cochran as State Purchasing Agent and Everett F. Merriam as head of the new State radio communications department. Cochran replaces Dante Vaio and Merriam will oversee all radio communication except police. Cargo also reappointed Tom Roberts to UNM Board of Regents and signaled budget criticisms while noting GOP governors may meet in Santa Fe next summer.
Variable cloudiness will sweep Lovington and surrounding area tonight into Thursday. Highs near 68 with lows around 38. State records show 72 at Hobbs and Roswell and Grants had an overnight low of 1. Lovington reached 72 at 12:30 p.m. and 36 at 7 a.m. in 1966.
A twelve man New Mexico Grand Jury reconvened to hear further evidence in the state highway probe that led to indictments for fraud against three top officials and a state representative. The charges involve misuse of $62,500 in bridge project funds on U.S. 180 south of Silver City.
Lovington Chamber of Commerce directors unanimous on expanding the 1967 budget to 19,525 as a debt ridden group plans an aggressive membership and finance drive. A new building is under construction and the president says the drive must cover debt retirement and higher operating needs. If pledges fall short, the chamber will trim operations to fit available funds.
Gov. David Cargo denied a report that he urged removal of the entire Highway Commission. He said he asked Chairman John Sudderth to resign so an independent inquiry could proceed into department irregularities. Four others including Chief Engineer T B White and Construction Chief Charles Johnson were indicted on fraud charges.
Police reported two separate crashes. Elaine Jones drove a 1965 Pontiac in the first. F G McCracken in a 1966 Dodge and Susan Williamson in a 1966 Ford were involved as rear impacts occurred when car two halted for a left turn. Damages totaled 1000 for the Ford, 600 for the Pontiac, 200 for the Dodge. A second crash on county road 97 involved Clemmie Irene Strickland in a 1964 Oldsmobile overturning after a tire failure near state road 18. Damages about 300.
