The Lovington City Lake received 175 pounds of rainbow trout or about 1,170 fish on Friday. The stocking followed a prior release on November 4 and marks the area’s first in several years. Conservation Officer Carl Hennington noted strong public response. Fishermen over 14 need a license for a 12 trout limit. under 14 may take six without a license. Only one rod permitted. trot lines, floating devices, and minnows are banned.
Regular semi monthly Lea County Commissioners Court was not held Monday due to the death of the commissioner from Hobbs Harry Eaves mother in law. The meeting will be rescheduled possibly Monday but not definite.
Lovington police logged four nonfatal wrecks in six hours Monday afternoon. A 1964 Chevy driven by Charles P. Blocker collided with a 1961 Dodge driven by Co F Wilkerson near the Lea County Courthouse, totaling both vehicles at about 100 dollars damage. A hit and run damaged a 1965 Ford parked near the library by Joe W Perdue. A 1958 Chevy and a 1961 Ford pickup collided near West Avenue and Third, with 25 and 20 dollars damage. The final collision involved a 1960 Rambler wagon driven by Walter P Oliver and a 1962 Volkswagen driven by Thomas S Campbell, with 35 and 150 dollars damage respectively.
At noon today Stephen McCraw, a passenger in a 1955 Ford Station wagon driven by Pansy Ann McCraw, sustained four head cuts in a collision at Main and Central. The other vehicle, a 1960 Buick driven by Ernest W. Willett, caused about $150 damage to each car.
Winners announced Saturday at 4 p.m. in the Longington Chamber of Commerce Christmas Contest. Ann Willoughby received $100, Frances Breeden $75, Gladys Beadle $50, Eva Sue Green $25.
A two car collision occurred this morning in the 900 block of South Main near Vy. Damage was extensive to both vehicles but no injuries were reported. Fire and police assisted at the scene.
A Lovington family reported a weekend break in at their home near the cotton warehouse in Southeast Lovington. Thieves stole wrapped gifts including toys and dolls left under the Christmas tree and $30 saved for a special dinner. Police linked the incident to Manuel Valderaz and family who were away visiting.
The National Education Association reports 452 Black teachers in southern and border states lost jobs or were demoted as school integration progressed. It cites 413 layoffs from closed Negro schools and 39 not rehired for ties to civil rights groups. Result released by a task force partly funded by the U S Office of Education.
Lovington City Commission will hold a regular semi monthly meeting at City Hall tonight at 7. The agenda includes reading minutes opening bids on cotton allotment setting dates for 1966 meetings advertising for bids on gasoline city attorney corrections to Ordinance No. 199 planning board request and payment of bills.
Mrs. Mary Faulkner Payne, 70, civic worker and longtime Leader staffer, died Sunday after a cancer battle. Funeral services were held at Metcalf Chapel of the Pines in Conroe, Texas, with graveside rites at Quanah Cemetery. Survivors include son Dr. H. M. Faulkner and grandsons H. M. Faulkner III and Jay Bairds Faulkner.
A bar brawl at the Smokehouse Bar in Lovington left 34 year old Benjamin Quiroz with a two inch chest stab wound after which Lovington police charged the bar owner W Hall with aggravated battery. Both men are Lovington residents.
Lea County Sheriff's Office reports a stabbing after an argument between Quiroz and Hall at a local bar. Quiroz was checked at an hospital overnight for observation. Hall posted a $500 bond and was jailed. No internal organs were hit. Police have not released a definite account of the incident.
The forecast shows little overall change with temperatures dipping slightly tonight. Lows near 38 and a high around 60 on Wednesday, with dry conditions expected.
The Lovington area reached 54 degrees by 3 PM with a 24 degree low at 7:30 AM. Nationwide readings show Alamitos California hit 75 while Boonville New York fell to 13 below zero.
Mrs. Donnie Atkinson of 822 South First reported items stolen from her unlocked trailer Monday between 9 a.m. and 10 p.m. Police are investigating the theft of three ladies suits and three sweaters.
