Lovington leaders press for U S 82 extension to Las Cruces amid rejection by the National numbering committee. State Highway Commissioner Sudderth and NM Highway Dept director Wiley debate reasons, considering alternate routes and future reapplications.
Ernest Hawkins of Moriarty was named Tuesday as director of gasoline tax collections in the Bureau of Revenue under Gov elect Mechem. Hawkins previously held the post during 1957 58 and has long been in ranching farming and real estate in New Mexico.
The state liquor office announced it issued commercial licenses to Art Jentzen of Clovis and Tomas and Maria Gonzales of Bernalillo County. Jentzen’s permit is the last of 12 Clovis dispenser licenses allotted after a court dispute over the city commission’s method. He will operate the Com Manche Bar at 106 S Connelly in Clovis.
Oscar Archie Rogers 622 North Love died Tuesday after a long illness in Lea General Hospital. Funeral service 1 30 p m Thursday at Smith Yarbro Funeral Home with burial in Lovington Cemetery. Survived by wife Edna Pearl five sons and five daughters, two brothers, 35 grandchildren and 17 great grandchildren. Casketbearers named plus honorary pallbearers listed.
The New Mexico State Personnel Board signaled general approval of a merit system bill for all state agencies. No vote was taken, but Chair Robert Castner said suggestions would be considered later. The bill, drafted for the 1961 session, aims to curb patronage, require exams, and limit campaign donations, with debate over excluding charitable institution workers. The board plans to seek legislative backing before January 10.
Samedan Oil Corporation Ardmore Oklahoma staked a 14000 foot Devonian wildcat three miles northeast of Mallamar and 2.4 miles southeast of the Anderson Ranch Wolfcamp. Union Oil conditioned for 105/8 inch casing to 10025 feet for completion in the Wolfcamp with perforations in No 2 33 Union State.
Rotary International announced Richard C. Brown of Eunice New Mexico received a Rotary Foundation fellowship for 1961 62 study abroad. He will study Latin American history to prepare for a U S State Department career at a major Latin American university. Brown is among 118 graduates from 25 countries.
Sixty bicycles are gathered from participating stores for a Friday giveaway at 1:30 p m on the east side of the courthouse square. Reese Greaves hosts the event with Jim Jameson recording and C E Jackson Wesley Holt and Police Chief James Robinson as checkers. Drawing rules require each child to be present to win.
Dow Wood a Lea County pioneer rancher, remains under treatment after a stroke left the left side paralyzed. His doctor calls his condition critical as he sits at home three miles south of Lovington after returning from a Lodge meeting. A large Lovington Christmas Bonanza crowd is expected downtown Friday at 1:30 pm for the bicycle giveaway.
President elect John F Kennedy selected Roswell Gilpatric a New York attorney and former Truman aide as deputy secretary of defense. Gilpatric will meet with Robert McNamara as budget talks for next year begin amid economic concerns and transition staffing.
Vernon Tiger Et 2/c, son of Mr and Mrs Tie Vowell of Artesia and former Lovington residents, has been discharged from White Sands hospital where he had been since December 3 after a head on collision. He sustained head injuries and bruises and is now stationed at White Sands.
The United Nations General Assembly starts an 11 week recess amid actions on Congo costs and Libya budgets. The body votes 40 to 27 to treat a $60 million Congo bill as a legal obligation for 99 members and approves a 1961 budget of about $72.97 million with up to $19 million for UNEF operations.
Washington reports privately that Vice President-elect Lyndon B. Johnson has begun courting liberal support for a 1968 presidential bid. He will lead the federal drive to end discrimination by contractors as Kennedy assigns him to oversee the anti discrimination contract compliance committee.
New York officials and Navy officials debated ship safety after a 12 hour blaze aboard the aircraft carrier Constellation at the Brooklyn Navy Yard. A 500 gallon kerosene drum cracked open ignited by a welder caused a fire that killed 49 with 38 identified of 4 000 civilian workers aboard. The cost and delay were noted as the ship would be repaired and commissioning pushed back about a year.
Homer Wandel Wilks of East Star Route was cited for failure to grant right of way after a minor collision at the intersection of Sth and Avenue D Tuesday at 8:45 p.m. His 1954 Chrysler struck Wilma Faye Painter's 1958 Ford Station Wagon at 1208 W Avenue N. Damages were about 125 dollars to Painter's car and 100 dollars to Wilks's vehicle.
