New Mexico Men Missing On Flight

Air Force and Civil Air Patrol planes entered the third day of searching for a twin engine private plane missing since Saturday with two prominent New Mexico men aboard. Missing were Jack Hobson chair man of the Otero State Bank Alamogordo and Citizens State Bank Vaughn and Alamogordo attorney Frank Boyce. Hobson's brother said the two men planned to fly to Flagstaff with a stopover at Phoenix. Hobson did not file a flight plan and radioed for Phoenix weather information Saturday but gave no position.

Kennedy Hurries Back To DC For NSC Meeting

President Kennedy, suffering a heavy head cold, flies back from South America to Washington to brief the National Security Council and prepare for a Bermuda talks with Prime Minister Harold Macmillan. Mrs Kennedy and the children stay at Capt. Michael Paul’s oceanfront estate until the family Christmas holidays.

Temporary taxes urged for the New Mexico special session

Leroy Harlow heads an $80 000 study on state revenues and expenditures and says any taxes passed in a special session should be temporary with a mid March start possible A one cent sales tax for a year to aid schools is discussed by Sen M P Carr and others Harlow notes the need to study revenue bureaus before recommending changes Roosevelt and Mechem are referenced in planning and reports on income class tax shares are expected in January

Lovington High Band Members Named All-State for 1962

Six Lovington High School musicians have been selected for the 1962 All-State Band of New Mexico. Second year members join Hilda Harrod Billie Jo Wheeler and Fred Northam among first timers. The group earned spots through sight reading, arpeggio memory, and solo performance in statewide auditions. They will perform at the New Mexico Educators Convention in Albuquerque February 1-2 under director J. D. Fry.

Truce Reached in Georgia Racial Demonstrations

Albany officials and Negro leaders agreed to a 60 day truce ending a week of protests. About 427 demonstrators were released from jail while renegotiations on racial issues were set to resume in mid January. The deal allows desegregation of waiting rooms at transit terminals but not restaurant facilities.

Germany ignorance clears traffic obstruction charge

Kurt A Rast, a 25 year old migrant, had obstruction of traffic charges dismissed by Municipal Judge James A Maloney after admitting to kissing his girl in the street. The judge cited that as a former Germany resident he did not know such obstruction was illegal and sent a copy of the New Mexico drivers manual.

Lovington Commission To Discuss City Needs

Lovington's city commission meets at 7 p.m. with a report from city manager Wes Allen on tax needs and minimum and maximum quotas for city services. The session covers insurance data, proposed zoning changes on North Love Street, and payment of bills.

Rites Pending For Local Man Ayala 69

Funeral services are pending for Eustacio Ayala 69 who died Friday night at Lovington Sea General Hospital after a heart attack. Born March 26 1892 in Mexico he lived at 217 East Ave C Lovington. Services will be at St Thomas Catholic Church with Smith Yarbro Funeral Home in charge. Survivors include wife Ignacia and several children two sons in Germany one in Lee Fort Manuela Armigo Carlsbad Adelaida Tena Lovington Susan Ayala and 16 grandchildren one brother Adelino Ayala Mexico. Funeral services tentatively set for 9 am Thursday at St Thomas Catholic Church pending arrival of a son from Germany.

India Overruns Goa Enclaves End of Portuguese Rule

Indian forces captured Pangim after eight hours of heavy fighting and accepted the surrender of Gov. General Vassalo e Silva. Nehru announced operations in Goa were nearly complete as Damao and Diu fell without resistance. The drive ends 451 years of Portuguese rule, with international reactions mixed.
