Patterson was the high bidder at 2.80 per acre for a five year lease covering 1 325 acres south of town previously held by Denver Dunlap who surrendered the lease. The city commission opened bids Tuesday night and awarded Cotton Rayburn Motor an extension on city vehicle repairs. Industrial Uniforms won work clothes, Mac's Shell retained tire repair, and Farm Equipment Service kept tractor maintenance with slightly lower rates than rivals. City offices will close December 25 and 26.
The House failed to override President Ford on tax cut legislation, signaling no further bids to extend 1975 recession tariffs. The roll call stood 265 to 157, seven votes short of the two thirds. Officials noted expected tax increases for families and individuals across income levels.
Washington report says New Mexico congressmen Harold Runnels and Manuel Lujan both voted against overriding President Ford's veto of the tax cut bill this morning.

State School Superintendent Leonard Delayo says the Department of Education plans to contest portions of a GAO preliminary audit listing $22,900 in exceptions and noting about $900,000 in other funds not singled as exceptions. He says nine employees may be tied to non directly related work and that final findings could require repayment if not overturned.

Final deadline for the Lovington Leader photo contest is tonight at 6 p.m. Entries in snapshot and photo-art divisions will be judged Friday and appear in Sundays Leader. Grand prize winners will be announced in Tuesdays edition and each category awards a $25 gift certificate. Winners should pick up entries and certificates at the Leader office after announcement.
