A weekly column surveys New Mexico’s future in 2000, forecasting growth in population to 2.7 million and rising demand for water. It notes the need to expand facilities across recreation, medical, and industry, and outlines planned highway improvements for both through traffic and tourism corridors.
Two major blazes struck Lovington and the Gladiola field area Friday night causing extensive property damage. The Sinclair natural gas processing plant suffered a $1 million plus loss with no injuries, while Dickens Furniture and Appliance on Main Street burned heavily, with losses estimated above $10,000 and including destroyed shop and parts. A cotton picker on the Hobbs farm also burned for about $5,000 in losses.
The Lovington region will see continued fair weather with variable high cloudiness on Sunday and Monday. Daytime highs around 65 degrees and cold nights near 26, with a record high of 66 noted at 2 PM and a low of 26 at 2 AM. Total rainfall for 1966 stands at 15.20 inches.
New Mexico's congressional delegation and Gov. Jack M. Campbell will confer in Santa Fe likely about the Democratic Party and a new state chairman. Sen. Clinton P. Anderson said Campbell scheduled the meeting for Monday and he will view the issue with the party leaders.
NASA reports the biosatellite failed to reenter as planned, dooming thousands of plant and small animal specimens. The capsule separated on command, but an indicator system displayed erroneous data, delaying planned recovery operations.

Lovington residents can donate food clothing toys and money Monday at the former Good Housekeeping building on Main as CPAC and the Woman's Club coordinate aid for about 50 families and 250 children. Donations accepted all day with scheduled volunteers from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
