Lea County memories recount the 1918 blizzard and the 1931 cold snap as the worst in regional history. E H Byers notes cattle losses between 100 and 200 head in 1918 and a 27 below zero 1931, with Grace Beauchamp recalling the 1918 wind and ice that year.
Only two days remain to register for one of 60 bicycles to be given away Friday at 1 30 p m in downtown Lovington. Tickets from 60 stores will enter a drum for a random drawing with rules to ensure one bike per family. Winners must be present to claim prizes.
Stephen Baltz, 11, aboard a passenger jet to a family Christmas reunion, survived a catastrophic crash that killed 127 others on two planes. Flames lit his burned face as he was found in a Brooklyn snow bank, and doctors expected him to live.
A US Air Force plane bound for Northolt clipped the Munich church spire in thick fog and crashed into a streetcar crowd. Officials say about 60 to 70 dead, including 13 students and 7 crew, with many shoppers burned. Survivors and a 11-year-old boy later died in Brooklyn. Debris and a gas explosion scattered bodies along the street.
Rosa Freeman five year old daughter of Mr and Mrs Joe Freeman was hospitalized after sticking her hand into a meat grinder while her mother watched cafe customers near Jefferson Elementary. She underwent emergency surgery in Hobbs for removal of the hand. The Freeman family operates the Jefferson and Third Streets cafe. The accident occurred Friday morning.
Three persons were treated for injuries after a 8:35 a m Friday crash at the Sth and Washington intersection. Betty Ann Coffer and Mrs Herb Fleming suffered wounds and contusions while Mrs Paul Coffer had a strained shoulder. Police cited Thomas Jefferson Steed for failure to yield. Minor crash at Love Street and Avenue D caused no injuries.
Lovington hosts a 5 p m nativity show on the west side of the courthouse square with six Birth of Jesus scenes in a 35 minute program. Streets including Main from Lea Theatre to Anthony's, Central Avenue south of the courthouse, and Washington Avenue north of the courthouse will be closed for the event. A sound system will be tested beforehand as the choir remains stationary. Tom Embree narrates with Rev. Harold Cates scripture readings and Bill Chandler directing the high school choir. Program remarks will come from J R Morgan chamber of commerce head, Jerry Stoltz chamber president, Mayor R L Jones, and clergy leaders Rev Gerald Masters and Rev Bob Lindley.
The Lovington Chamber of Commerce hosts a 35 minute Nativity program of scripture reading narration and songs at 5 p m on the west side of the courthouse square. Two of six Nativity scenes will be portrayed during the event inviting all residents to attend.
