County Agents document Lea County farms totaling 747 on 2,811,520 acres with 98,000 irrigated. Cotton earned 7,534,520 from 26,909 acres. total 1956 farm income 11,652,620 including grain sorghum silage alfalfa and corn. Soil bank reserve 618 acres.
Future Farmers report good results from their Christmas Tree sale but still have a number to sell before Christmas. Trees are available at Lea County Lumber Company on Main Street.
Thieves took wallets and clothing from W. A. Thompson Drilling Company doghouse west of town Sunday night. Three men G. O. Terry A. J. Benson both of Lovington Trailer Court and D. L. Abbot Plaza Hotel report losses. Items included wallets pants shirts and a winter jacket. Personal papers were also taken, deemed highly important by each man. Losses totaled a few dollars.
A puzzled visitor to city hall notes a board listing department heads and their locations. Seeing Harrison’s name labeled opposite Jail and later Cemetery, the observer quips about a very short jail sentence before execution in a cryptic, urban mystery.
Chester Hamzy and Bill Sybert reported findings from a yearlong Lovington schools evaluation at a December 13 faculty meeting in the High School Library. Teachers and administrators from Junior and Senior High discussed strengths and weaknesses and will continue the review throughout the year.
The legislative council drafts a bill for a statewide 1 percent sales tax increase to fund municipalities and counties. Republican Sen J G Moore of Lincoln County requests the measure, which would raise Albuquerque’s 3 percent rate already in place.
Two Spanish men were arrested after robbing salesman Wayne Mosley in Bronco Saturday. Sheriff Chambliss picked them up in Plains Sunday afternoon. they face return to Lea County this afternoon. Mosley, Amarillo salesman, found his car looted with a small overnight bag four hubcaps an overcoat field glasses and a box of Christmas cards valued at $150.
A 17-year-old Albuquerque girl, Carolyn Jo Rhodes, escaped from the County Indian Hospital Monday night and is believed to have stolen two cars while fleeing police. She has been linked to a previous Sears Store fire and is being held at a girls welfare home and a Las Vegas mental hospital.
Maria Jimenez a Spanish woman died at 4 a m Monday December 17 born December 9 1930 in Texas. She lived in Lovington for two months and is survived by her husband Tony Jimenez. The funeral is pending.
At the Sophomore class meeting on December 12 Future Farmers demonstrated the wrong and right way to hold a meeting using parliamentary procedure. Participants included Leon Harkey David Coggin Ronnie Short Kenneth Peacock Monty Dirickson and David Bunch.
Diplomatic sources say Marshal Tito of Yugoslavia will be invited to the United States by President Eisenhower next year. The White House and State Department declined to comment on the plan.
About 57 000 state employees across the state voted nearly five to one to join the federal social security retirement system. The vote covered statehouse workers and staff from many state supported institutions. The plan would take effect around January 1 after Governor Simms signs the election certificate and officials act.

Workmen at A W Thompson Drilling Company Rig west of Lovington scare a would be thief from the doghouse Monday night. A watchman spotted a furtive shadow and alarms drew workers in pursuit. The burglar fled across a cattle guard in a dusty escape, leaving with nothing but fear as lawmen seek him with a car description.
Santa Fe led the weekend toll with five deaths on state highways. A Santa Fe accident on U S 285 killed three, two others died in Texico area crashes, and Portales, Earth Texas victims brought the weekend total to five. Officer accounts cite reckless driving and high speed linked to the fatal crash near Santa Fe.
Sheriff J. G. McAdoo stated Campbell died of natural causes despite local belief of foul play. Campbell was found dead near Hobbs after boarding a bus, with a wine case and bottle found nearby, an eye injury, and gaps in movement records from November 15 to 19.
Shell Oil Company reports 2,800 feet of orange coated cable valued at about $2,000 stolen between Saturday quitting time and Monday morning. The loss occurred three miles east and ten miles north of Tatum where a crew was working. Investigators say the cable was dragged two miles northward before likely being loaded onto a truck.
Two minor crashes occurred within minutes Monday evening. B H Saldana, 30, charged with driving with revoked license after his 1949 Ford rear collided with a same model vehicle driven by J Sanchez, both sustaining about 150 dollars in damage near state road 18. A second single vehicle crash involved Jim Lancaster, 29, of Lamesa who ran off the road, struck a bar ditch, and caused minor grill damage. deputy Ames Robinson cited sharp road edges as a factor.
Lovington City Commission meets tonight at 7 30 with little business on the agenda. City Manager Bill Harrison plans a discussion on land purchase for a water well and his monthly report outlining current and planned water projects.
Charley Campbell and R L Jones filed qualifications for city commission. Jones filed with City Clerk Osborn Fisher on Saturday and will run in district one. District five remains contested with Campbell and Robert Thomason Jr. seeking the area, while Campbell vows clean campaigning and endorsement of city progress.
Britain launches fuel rationing on its first day as reports of a thriving black market surface. The Daily Herald notes gas ration coupons trading from 30 cents and up, with racketeers setting prices.
Sheriff J G McAdoo announced that former Police Sgt Wendell Pistol Green would join the department as radio operator effective January 1. City Manager Bill Harrison said Green tendered his resignation Saturday with no stated reason, Green citing personal reasons.
The death of George Ralph Campbell 29 former National Potash Co employee and son of Lea Eddy county ranchers drew renewed inquiry after a Lea County investigator appeared in Carlsbad. An Hobbs coroners jury ruled he died about four days before being found near Highway 62. A rope fragment was found in the pasture and investigators seek witnesses to Campbell activities between Nov 16 and 19. Anyone with information is asked to contact Eunice police.
A barefoot burglar entered the old Central School on West Jefferson Sunday. Night watchman Jim Bell reported the break. police found no items missing. The intruder escaped via the fire escape, leaving bare footprints in the dirt at the ladder foot. Police could not determine how entry was gained or what was sought.
L. O. Lee of Odessa was injured Sunday afternoon when he fell about eight feet on Frawley Drilling Company property five miles north and two west of Tatum. He suffered a dislocated shoulder and minor cuts and abrasions, was treated at Lovington Clinic and released.
The Budapest broadcast claims nearly 400 people were arrested in 24 hours, described as rebels and criminals linked to anti Communist resistance. Charges include illegal arms possession with death penalty, and five death sentences have been issued. one execution occurred. Pravda accuses Yugoslavia of interference and denounces its stance in the communist struggle.

A clearly intoxicated man wandered into a local office Friday night seeking unknown business. An employee, cautious for his safety, refused to let the man leave, then called police. Officers removed the drunk, who declared he could not drive.
Louis Holman an Agriculture Education major at New Mexico A&M has been student teaching at Lovington High School for six weeks under instructor Ronald Cunningham. Professor Carl Howard head of Agriculture Education at New Mexico A&M visited to observe his progress before he leaves for State College this week.
