The New York subway strike ends with over 1500 Motormen and union members voting to return to work. Union leaders including Theodore Loos are jailed briefly for calling the strike but are released after assurances from Mayor Wagner.
United Press reports Governor Hugh MaCintosh Foot of Cyprus supports self rule and has 28 years in foreign service. He arrives amid Cyprus tensions and NIcosia rioting by students four days after taking office. Foot, a former Jamaica governor, has guided West Indies federation setup and held key Mediterranean roles.
Ernest Tucker of Roswell urged two fundraising dinners before the March primary filing date and another after the primary voting. He spoke to about 35 elected state officials and key Democrats in Santa Fe as an executive committee hearing was postponed for lack of a quorum. One dinner at $10 a plate was planned in Albuquerque with another likely in Roswell around January 24.
New Mexico American Legion requests amending the tax excuse law to count 90 days of service any part during a period of conflict rather than only days served in active combat. Legion commander W. Peter McAtee urged the change at the mid winter conference in Albuquerque. Delegates set the department convention for Artesia June 28 to 30.
Funeral services are set for 2 p.m. today in the Episcopal Church for Clyde Zimmerman who died Sunday in a Lubbock hospital after a short illness. Born July 25, 1901 in Midland Texas, he was 56. Survivors include his mother Stella Zimmerman three sisters Ruth Zimmerman Maiie Aiston Hazelham and one brother Bill Zimmerman. Casket bearers include Sam Williams George Williams and others from Artesia and Deming. Flowers refused and contributions may be sent to the church organ fund. He was a member of the Episcopal Church and the Masonic Lovve. He was a native Lea County resident and part of a pioneer family. burial will be in Lovington Cemetery.
President Eisenhower renews invitation to French President Coty to visit the United States, likely in the spring of next year, signaling warming postwar ties between Paris and Washington.
Seattle lawyers for Dave Beck announce a new trial motion will base on juror compliance issues in the grand jury phase and not alleging juror misconduct. Beck was found guilty of embezzling 1900 dollars from a union Cadillac sale and awaits sentencing with a possible appeal to the Washington Supreme Court if denied.

Edward Robin Van Hasstert four month old baby of Mr and Mrs Ferry Van Haastert passed away suddenly late Saturday evening. Funeral services were held December 15 at 2 30 in the Methodist Church with burial in Lovington Cemetery. The family are Dutch refugees from Holland and are sponsored by the Methodist Church. Parents were in Roswell when illness began and left the baby at a day nursery. An attendant noticed illness, police were called and the baby was pronounced dead on arrival at the doctor’s office.
Oil, Chemical and Atomic Workers Union President O A Knight will meet district directors in Denver to study a possible four day week as layoffs rise from automation. He notes plant closings and attrition, urges industry to meet workers halfway to ease displacement.

An English war bride Mrs. Ivy Hannah of Sheffield says her son Freddie Zumwalt is being held in Joplin Missouri by his father Elson Zumwalt. They married in 1944, divorced soon after, custody given to her. Freddie visited last May and was to return in November. she says the father insisted on staying for better education and to keep him in the United States. She has sought help from a British MP and President Eisenhower, receiving an acknowledgment from the American consul.
M. L. Leddy and Sons, bootshop owners, bought the T Motel on South Main from Mr and Mrs Townsend. Managers John Tomlinson and spouse ran a riding stable for the Leddys in San Angelo for three years. John Tomlinson is L O Tomlinson’s son, a pioneer resident of Livingston.
West German Chancellor Adenauer urged new peace talks with the Soviet Union during NATO summit sessions in Paris. He proposed initial diplomatic contacts to gauge Soviet Premier Bulgaria’s threats and to seek a peaceful order that protects life and freedom. Eisenhower warned victory over Communism remains not inevitable and must be earned through effort.
President Eisenhower revisits his SHAPE headquarters in Europe recalling World War II days. He says he feels well and greets SHAPE officers before leaving the continent Thursday night.
The 38 foot schooner Gitana, missing for 70 days since leaving Honolulu October 4, was found docked in San Jose del Cabo Mexico. Three men were aboard when a crew member phoned relatives in California. Skipper William Brendehoff of Honolulu reportedly planned to reach Puget Sound near Thanksgiving.
Sacramento draft board sent John J. Sak, a long serving Air Force sergeant with World War II citations, a notice to report for induction in Fontainebleau France. Sak, home in Bristol Pennsylvania, has served 17 years and fears a mistaken call for service.
Researchers at the St. Paul Science Museum uncovered a small batch of pottery on Grey Cloud Island in the Mississippi River below St. Paul. The pieces, molded by Native Americans over 4,000 years ago, are believed to be the oldest of their kind found in the United States.
Secretary Dulles announced at the Paris NATO summit that the United States would stockpile nuclear warheads in Western Europe and ship intermediate range missiles under US control to bolster defenses. The plan drew mixed European reaction but was received without comment by NATO members. Eisenhower urged a margin of power and possible talks with the Soviet Union to ease the arms race.
