Dallas. Louis Spencer Smith Jr., 19, a North Texas University music major, died seven hours after his father Dr. Louis S. Smith opened the youth’s chest with a razor and attempted external heart massage at their home. Parkland Hospital staff failed to revive him.
Health officials across several states warned that imported Hong Kong holiday novelties may contain contaminated water including infant teething rings and frozen ice cubes. The U S Public Health Service said harmful bacteria were found in some items but no illnesses reported. A man hospitalized in Moline, Illinois, after consuming a drink chilled with the imported ice cubes prompted authorities to investigate. Sale of the novelties was banned in multiple states and districts with warnings issued elsewhere.
Lovington residents will see the nativity tableau illuminate at 5 p.m. Wednesday on the courthouse lawn. The Lovington High School choir and part of the band will perform carols and anthems, with rehearsals and additional performances planned through next week.
Newly elected county committeemen will meet at Sea Con ASCS Office Wednesday at 1 p.m. to elect the 1966 ASC County Committee. One member will serve three years, one for two years, and a third for one year. Thereafter one new member will be elected annually. The meeting is open to the public.
The North Central 4H Club of Lovington offers safety ideas for Christmas trees submitted by Gary Wige gins president. Tips include keeping the tree in water using flame resistant icicles using approved wiring and fixtures and avoiding open flames.
Delmer Lee Partlow, 25, was arrested at Mallamar Monday by Lea County Sheriff and held in Lea County Jail in Lovington awaiting pickup by Big Spring authorities. He is wanted in Big Spring on a charge of contributing to delinquency of a minor and has signed a waiver of extradition.
The Lovington forecast calls for cloudiness tonight and Wednesday with occasional light rain and cooler temperatures. Tonight low near 40, Wednesday high around 50. Monday’s high reached 55 at 3 p.m. and this morning’s low was 31 at 6 a.m. Nationwide excluding Alaska and Hawaii, high Monday hit 88 at Miami Beach, Florida, with a low of 2 above zero at Cut Bank, Montana.
A joint Lea County Commodity Committees meeting is set for tonight at 7 o'clock at the Farm Bureau office in Lovington. J W Spears of Lovington states the gathering will review state Farm Bureau resolutions and plan county work, with reports from committee members and agents to outline events and activities. Attendees include Dale Caudill, Dwain Woody, L G Caudi, C E McPherson, Edd Walcker, M C Benham, Joe and J W Spears on the four committees.
In Pearl River Louisiana four children ages 3 and younger died in a trailer fire caused by a faulty space heater gas line. The mothers Charlene Roney and Jo Ann Thomas were charged with negligent homicide after leaving to pay rent and returning to find the blaze. Both were released on 2500 bond.
