The New Mexico State Board of Finance approved a 32000 emergency purchase to acquire a second abandoned Air Force radar site at Moriarty. State Budget Director Spiller said action was urgent to secure the site for potential use by State Police and possible housing for officers, with eventual plans for a training center.
A Dallas firm submitted the apparent low bid of 1 758 509 for a demonstration brackish water plant at Roswell New Mexico to produce 1 million gallons daily. Seven bids were opened by the Office of Saline Water with totals up to 2 773 311 and evaluation will determine the winner.
Richard Lucero, 19, was acquitted of murder in the Sept. 1 stabbing of amateur boxer Arthur Romero, Golden Gloves champion. A second Raton youth, Alvin Sea, 20, faces preliminary assault charges in the same incident after testimony that Sena struck Lucero with an ax. Lucero suffered a fractured skull.
Princess Catherine Saradja described six years in Romania under communist rule and warned Americans to resist subversive tactics. She urged a strong U S policy against expansion, recounted losses under dictatorship, and called listeners to vigilance against “creeping infiltration” of government.
UPI reports Globemaster transports delivered 700 Ethiopian troops, 22.5 tons of ammo and supplies, and 14 jeeps to Katanga. An additional 105 Ethiopians and 250 Swedish troops were said to have arrived. Katanga appealed to Undersecretary Bunche to study alleged U.N. cruelty, offering protection for his visit from Leopoldville to Elisabethville.
New Mexico enjoys a milder spell after a brutal cold snap though Farmington and nearby towns face water system repairs from record lows. Snow flurries and showers are forecast across the north and south with warmer winds for the plains and rising daylight temperatures through Thursday. Documented cold includes Farmington 14 below, Raton 13 below, Clayton 1 below. southern lows in the 20s and 30s.
The forecast calls for increasing cloudiness with a few light snow chances in Farmington Las Vegas and Gallup. Notable temperature ranges are listed for eastern New Mexico including Artesia Lovington Carlsbad Clovis Portales and Tucumcari with milder readings today and Thursday.
US seeks approval to press ahead with probing talks with the Soviet Union on Berlin despite French hostility. NATO opens a three day session in Paris dominated by Berlin issues with Britain and West Germany backing renewed talks and broad allied support anticipated.
Lembke Construction Co of Albuquerque New Mexico won a 1 313 550 contract for building new shop facilities to house 244 additional Indian students on the Navajo reservation at Shonto Arizona. The Interior Department said the site will be about three quarters of a mile from the existing Indian School.
Lovington Lions Club and Goodfellows appeal for new or used toys and clean clothing to be distributed with food baskets on December 22. Contributions can be dropped at Rev. Austin Cullen’s residence or mailed to Chief Goodfellow Box 1347 Lovington. More than 120 families are expected to receive aid.
Local merchants in Lovington launch a coordinated sales push titled Best Buys inviting shoppers to visit participating stores. The initiative highlights discounts, new arrivals, and community events to boost holiday shopping in the town.
Drilling teams work around the clock at the Gnome nuclear test site near Carlsbad. Dr. Phillip J. Randolph says at least half the half-life data may be recovered from the shaft base, while other hot materials with longer half-lives await scientists. Rig work could finish Thursday as water is pumped to create steam pressure and readings from geophones indicate a sealed cavity formed by the 3 kiloton explosion.
