The Hopper the Community Christmas Card drive reports $600 raised and aims for about $4,000 more to reach $5,000 for next year to keep Lovington’s lights bright. The group notes a $2,500 reserve and plans to buy new strings as needed.
The Revenue Stabilization Committee approved a 5 percent severance tax on uranium and raised steam coal to 5 percent, exempting metallurgical coal. Sen. Theodore Montoya cast the tie breaking vote for the exemption, while figures warned tax rates must balance industry impact and potential court challenges. The plan aims to bolster the permanent energy fund with future-generation funding, with final decisions to go to the legislature.
A federal judge in Mexico City reversed former President Luis Echeverria's expropriation of 250000 acres in Sonora for peasants and ordered land returned to former owners. A rural workers leader warned that landless peasants could revolt if the decision is not upheld.
Mrs. Audra Carruthers 56 of 321 West Avenue A died in Hobbs Hospital Saturday morning after a week in confinement. She and husband Ross lived in Layington 16 years. he works for Marcum Drilling. Born March 23 1920 in Moundsville WV she is survived by son Ross Carruthers Jr in the Navy daughter Diane Grimm of Jewett OH and two sisters. Funeral Monday at 2 p.m. at Smith Rogers Chapel Rev Wayne Mahoney officiating. Interment Lovington Cemetery.

The Kiwanis sponsored AID fund for a critically ill Pa baby received three new donations totaling 5 dollars and 50 cents, bringing the grand total to 2505 dollars. Contributors include Mr. and Mrs. F B McDonald and Mr. and Mrs. Cart Johnson Jr. and an anonymous donor.
Betty Mata of Otero County is suspended on Attorney General Anaya recommendation amid alleged embezzlement and falsification of public records in tax collection and receipts handling. The four office staff are placed on leave as Montoya assumes control pending grand jury inquiry and a hearing is set for next Friday.
The Annual County 4-H Awards program on December 4 1976 in Lovington honored local 4-H members for the year. Special Honorary Membership plaques went to Troy Fort and Larry Wooten for active 4-H support. Meritorious Service Awards were given to Lea County Fair Board and Bill Wooley of Eunice for promoting 4-H.
Students from Lovington High School music department present the annual Christmas concert at Parnell Auditorium Monday December 13 at 7 30 pm Admission is free The Big Blue Band directed by J D Fry performs familiar holiday music An old fashioned sing along features The Acapella Choir directed by Carol Brashear and the Wesley Ringers hand bell choir from the Methodist Church Mystic Impressions sings The program includes Jingle Bell Travelogue with songs from different lands Directors promise a varied program with something for everyone.
Lovington Chamber of Commerce members will meet Tuesday December 14 at Pearl's for a luncheon program by Bonnie Maynard on motivational concepts and effective language. The January New Mexico Junior College course will teach the met pro ram to members. Cindy Anderson, Lovington High School senior, will be honored as young citizen of the month. Lunch at 12:00 noon.
Southeast Plains expect sunny skies and a mild warming trend Sunday and Monday with winds under 15 mph. Hobbs-Lovington highs in the 50s and low 60s, overnight lows in the 20s.
Lovington Mayor Harold Denton outlined city progress and a $100 monthly raise for all workers. He cited mechanized trash pickup saving tax money and boosting safety, but warned the city is about 100000 behind in gross receipts tax revenues delaying capital items like a fire truck and ambulance. He praised staff effort and expressed cautious optimism about regaining ground.
