The Canvassing Board will meet in Santa Fe to certify the results of Tuesday's special election in which 122,606 New Mexicans voted. The final tally shows 63,042 against ratification and 59,564 in favor, a 3,478 vote margin. Only seven counties approved. Torreon swung Sandoval County against ratification.
Senator A T Montoya of Rio Arriba Sandoval said he sent Gov David F Cargo a certified petition calling for a special legislative session to reduce taxes The petition mailed Tuesday bears 26 state senators names and cites an emergency in the state's affairs asking for convening the legislature.
The National Episcopal Church executive council approved a $40,000 grant to Alianza 25 to 21 in Greenwich Connecticut. Bishop Charles J. Kinsolving III of Santa Fe opposed the grant and will withhold diocesan support citing Alianza violence.
The 1969 Lovington High School Wildcats football team, State Class A Champions, were honored at a banquet hosted by parents and coaches. Coach Harold Teal led the program as master of ceremonies, with Booster Club president Pinky Jones praising the season and recalling past success.
Mrs Rob Garrett Thurmond aged 83 died Tuesday in a Carlsbad hospital. A pioneer southeast New Mexico resident born April 8 1886 she moved to Carlsbad in 1893 and lived there most of her life. Services were held at Grace Episcopal Church and burial followed at Carlsbad Cemetery. She is survived by six sisters in Texas California Utah Utah and New Mexico.
Five Indian pueblos file a federal lawsuit in Albuquerque alleging discrimination against Indian children and in hiring, breach of a Santo Domingo Pueblo lease for a school site, misuse of federal funds, and collusion in fund misallocation. Defendants include the school board Interior Secretary Hickel Indian Commissioner Bruce and others.
About 55 members of Students for a Democratic Society voted Wednesday night to appeal a denial of recognition at New Mexico State University. SDS leaders criticized the decision as an assault on free thought and pledged to pursue an appeal beginning Monday.
Lovington residents contribute 572.50 to the Lovington Chamber of Commerce Christmas Card fund the largest turnout since the program began. Funds will buy and repair community lights and support seasonal projects including The Messiah at the high school gym and a Nativity Scene on the courthouse lawn. Donor names will appear in the Leader’s Christmas Eve edition.
Cadet Phillip Hare ris of West Point will address students at Tatum High School on December 18 1969 at 9 15 a m. The event, sponsored by the Cadet Public Relations Council, aims to promote understanding of the Military Academy and attract applicants. Additional appearances occur December 18 at Lovington Kiwanis Club 12 a m and Taylor Junior High School at 2 p m. December 19 features Lovington High School at 8 30 a m and Central Junior High School at 10 a m.
