Lovington Schools show rising average daily membership. Superintendent Larry Crouse told the school board that last month’s enrollment reached 3,363, up from 3,358 the prior month, with ADM increasing each month since the start of school.

District Court Arraignments and Sentencing Schedule
District Court had a full schedule Tuesday morning with arraignments and sentencing. Thomasene Gay Crowe, 22, Hobbs, pled not guilty to forgery and is free on a $1500 bond. Kenneth Turner, 15, Lovington, pled not guilty to failing to attend school. trial date to be set. Billy R. McCarty was passed over for DWI. Robert E. Bystanders Halt Hit and Run Driver on Main Street
Manuel Yslas Martinez driving a 1957 Chevrolet swiped a parked car in front of Turner's Department Store on North Main. He fled as bystanders Bert Webber and Robert Floyd pursued him through downtown Lovington, cornering him in an alley between the Post Office and Main.

A proposed New Mexico constitution costing 600000 and drawn over six years was defeated by a 2500 vote margin in a special election. Turnout reached a New Mexico record of over 120000 despite bad weather, with only eight of 32 counties voting yes. Gov. Cargo lamented the loss and opponents blamed smear campaigns and lack of funding. Northern counties led the opposition as Mora, Santa Fe, Rio Arriba, and Taos counties voted heavily against ratification.
