Governor’s Day for the Tatum Lions Club is Thursday December 11 at Care Wells Restaurant at 7:30 p.m. Lions District 40X Governor Sidney J Bernard of Carlsbad will make a district visit to about 30 clubs including Tatum.
Two unmasked men robbed John's Drive In Grocery Monday night taking more than $975 in cash and an undetermined amount of tickets checks and food coupons. Employees Joe Paloma Mary Paloma and Esperanza Madrid described two white men 30s and 50s with guns and a blue shirt and Levi jacket.
In a Scenic River Valley case, preservationists and opponents moved the dispute before the New Mexico Public Service Commission. Attorneys cited a 1965 New York decision as they urged the panel to block or approve a $53 million coal fired plant near Farmington. Public Service Co. of New Mexico is a partner in the venture.
Roy Robinson won the Lovington Chamber of Commerce slogan contest with Little City with a Big Heart earning a $25 bond. About 75 slogans were submitted from as far as Minnesota with 81 year old Carlsbad resident suggesting Lovington Lacks Only You. The Lovington Booster Club meeting is postponed to next Monday at 7 30 PM in the High School Gym.
Nonnie Edgar Ford 22 a Lovington minister of the Apostolic Faith Church was killed when his 1959 white truck struck a potash train stopped across State road 31 five miles south of U S 180. He died of severe head and body injuries at the scene.
In Santa Fe AP reports a Tax Commission hearing on Southern Union Gas Co property tax assessment continued into its second day. Southern Union contends the 1969 valuation is incorrect and protests proceed amid legal arguments and process delays.
Cecil Ray Rinehart, 37, was sentenced to life imprisonment by District Court Judge Kermit Nash after pleading guilty to the brutal slaying of 72 year old Hobbs businessman Philip Vener. Vener was beaten bound and gagged in his Hobbs home on November 17, 1967.
Pedro Cano, 40, of McDonald died when a 1962 GMC pickup spun off Highway 18 near County Road 127. Driver Armando Berumen and passenger Manuel Hernandez Robles fled the scene but were later located. Vehicle damaged about $300. Cano taken to Smith Rogers Funeral Home. family in Old Mexico sought.
P A Kemp father of Paul Kemp of Lovington died Sunday afternoon in Paris Tennessee. Funeral services were scheduled for Tuesday afternoon at McAvoy Funeral Home in Paris.
Cloudy conditions in the eastern plains with rain and snow developing this evening and showers continuing through early night. Clearing later tonight with partial clouds and a rise in temperature. Lovington expected low 30s high around 50 with a 20 percent moisture chance on Wednesday.
The Motor Vehicle Department announces car licenses go on sale December 15. Owners may mail registrations and payment in advance. tags will be sold starting December 15. Office at 117 East Avenue B open 8 AM to 4 30 PM through license rush, including noon hour. Bring 1969 registration.
The Lovington Post Office will be open Saturday December 13 1969 from 8:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m. to help workers mail for Christmas. Nonworkers should mail by Friday as delivery by Christmas is near. Parcels should have only one
