Patrons of Tatum School District voted 184 in favor to 132 opposed of 316 ballots cast to approve a 1.6 million dollar bond issue. The school board will canvass the results tonight and begin an extensive repair and remodeling program.

A Santa Fe report says Dr. Joel Hochman argues Gary Gilmore’s mental illness makes his firing squad death plan a dangerous legal moral precedent. Hochman rejects televised executions and warns the death sentence could reward self harm and undermine human life.
Government expert William Fisher predicts by 1985 no major advances in energy. Oil and gas will supply about 65 percent of total energy, with coal 21 percent, atomic 9 percent, hydroelectric unchanged, and solar at 0.5 percent. IOCC members urge deregulation and domestic resource incentives, seeking Carter backing.
Services are pending for Mrs. Antonia Lopez 49 of 1114 South Fifth Street who died after being stricken at home and transported to a Hobbs hospital. She was born November 10 1927 in Pecos Texas and married Stone Lopez on August 28 1943 in San Antonio Mexico. She was a member of St. Thomas Catholic Church and is survived by her husband several children siblings and extended family with funeral arrangements to be announced by Smith Rogers Funeral Home.
Gary Gilmore's attorney asked the Fourth District Court to issue a writ of habeas corpus arguing the death sentence expired because execution was not carried out within 60 days as required by Utah law. The lawyer contends Gilmore is illegally restrained at the State Prison.
