Sunshine spread across New Mexico after a storm dumped up to 6 inches of snow in several areas. Cloudcroft reported six inches while Carrizozo to Corona saw 6 to 8 inches. Roswell Artesia and Carlsbad had 3 to 4 inches. State Police said roads were open but ice possible with lows from 0 to 19.
A Friday crash near Albuquerque killed 11 people and sparked a federal investigation into the cause. The Lode star airliner, a WWII transport, reportedly skimmed a home roof before exploding over 10 acres as two Texans pilots attempted an emergency landing in snow and low clouds. Passengers included families from Borger Stratford Perryton and other Texas towns. The Las Vegas to Albuquerque flight departed at 10 43 local time.
A. L. Hahn and Eddie Robinson bought Choice retail development property in southwest Lovington from June Development Corporation owners Art Bintz and Ernest Phillips. The sale includes undeveloped land south of Avenue D between 9th and 11th Streets, three occupied storefronts, and excludes a 9th and Avenue D corner owned by Texaco. The duo will retain separate brokerages and plan to lease the site to 7 to 15 potential retailers, with use undecided.
The Messiah concert will be on Sunday December 14 at 3 00 p.m. in the High School Gymnasium. Lovington singers form the core with A Cappella and church choirs from Lovington and Emmett Cohagan directs Lea County Chorale and New Mexico Junior College Choir. Soloists include Irma Lee Caldwell W A Anderson Bill Martin Jim Ragsdale Gayle Beasley Philetha Lynn and Carrie Wilson. Wilma Jean Church and Mrs Ray Short accompany on piano and organ. Admission is free and all are invited. Rehearsals at 2 00 p m today and Thursday evening will see Hobbs singers join local choristers.
New Mexico faces a single vote on a newly drafted constitution after 64 years of work. Officials expect light turnout with 20 to 25 percent of 355 000 registered voters at risk of voting, possibly around 90 000.
A former employee of the New Mexico Constitutional Convention says there was no need to rush the Spanish translation of the new constitution. Pedro Ribera Ortega, who translated the document, notes inadvertent errors and omissions due to haste. A.B. Collado of El Hispano and public information director Charles Dowaliby criticized the quality, citing a rushed job and dropped words.
Lea County Farm and Livestock Bureau directors oppose the proposed state constitution. They argue bonding should be limited to real property owners, warn of excessive power in a governors council, and question legislators setting their own salaries via governor control.
Lovington residents hear plans for a Good Samaritan Club to support a new nursing home. Organizer Mrs Reese Greaves invites churches clubs and organizations to send a representative to the December 9 7 o clock gathering at the Publicity Building.
Maj. Martin Vigil 47 of Espanola takes command after Chief Joe Black 62 retires. Decision made in secret Friday meetings by the State Police Board and announced via radio to officers. Gov. Cargo questioned the open handling. board and officials praised Black’s service as they prepare public notice next week.
Raymond Worrell precinct 8 chairman says plans for a Demo breakfast on December 9 at 7 a.m. are complete Tickets remain with committee members Jane Smith Peggy Pevey Al Savisky Carl Hopper and Johnnie Mae Crowder. All prospective 1970 election candidates are invited and all interested Demos may attend.
