Lea County farmers end 1976 harvests with low yields and falling prices. Crowded by three pre winter storms, harvest is 95 to 97 percent complete and county corn yields around 6,000 pounds per acre, well below last year. Cotton brings over 70 cents a pound with decent grades despite a damaging October freeze. alfalfa yields about six tons per acre at $60 a ton, with overall weak profits across crops.
