Cyrus H K Curtis argues against capital punishment citing fallible juries and moral constraints. He notes New Mexico and 45 states vary in laws, with a trend away from executions and calls for efficient law enforcement without the death penalty.
More than 1,000 antiwar protesters marched on the Whitehall induction center in Lower Manhattan. Police arrested about a third of the demonstrators, including Dr. Benjamin Spock and poet Allen Ginsberg, as the crowd dispersed after five hours.
The Board of Finance approved $6 million in bond issue funds for state colleges and special schools in Santa Fe. This allocation completes the final step in distributing the first installment from a $42.5 million statewide bond issue approved by voters last year to be disbursed in five installments.
George Miller, 62, of Mallamar, died Monday morning at Lovington Sea General Hospital. He was one of five men burned when a hot oil line burst during a pipeline treatment near Mallamar. Alex Eubanks and Clarence Holcomb were reported in serious condition. Paul White and Jerry Connors were in less serious condition. Miller's funeral arrangements are pending with a mortuary in Artesia.
The defense in Hobbs New Mexico presents evidence in the murder case of Bobbie Denny who is charged with killing her husband in July. The trial opened yesterday and may not go to the jury until late tonight or tomorrow morning. Prosecutor D A Patrick Hanagan of Roswell is assisted by Ray Potter. Easley and Reynolds of Hobbs represent the defendant.
Charlie C. Selman 83 longtime Tatum area rancher died at Lovington General Hospital Monday after three weeks in care. Born September 2 1884 in Concord Texas he is survived by wife Emmie Correll Melrose and Effie Robinson Jewett Texas two grandchildren and three great grandchildren. Funeral was held this afternoon at 2 in First Methodist Church Tatum with Rev Doyle Riley and Rev Joe Emanuel officiating. Burial in Tatum Cemetery followed by casket bearers Prentis Harris Irby Harris Perry Caudle and Dick Taylor. Smith Rogers Funeral Home directed arrangements.
Lea County leaders consider subsidizing Hobbs ambulance service with a plan to fund operations and expand standby fire and disaster response. They review health and pension issues, a new state employee health plan, and fencing requests for rural roads, deferring East Sanger paving and airport interests.
The Lovington forecast calls for increasing clouds through tonight with low temperatures around 15 to 30 degrees in the north and 25 to 40 in the south. Wednesday will see highs from 48 to 68 with a 56 to 70 range in the southern area and lows near 30.
In Santa Fe the absentee voting proposal and a Highway Commission amendment were rejected in the Nov 7 special election. The highway amendment to remove the commission from constitutional status passed 27 598 to 25 338 and had been declared passed. The board contends the total votes on all constitutional amendments 56 152 should determine the approval percentage, not just the amendment vote, arguing the commission failed by 478 votes to reach a simple majority of the total. The Supreme Court had ordered the board to show cause why the absentee ballot amendment should not be certified as passed.
The Federal Power Commission argues for area wide natural gas pricing in the Permian Basin challenging company rate structures. If adopted, abandonment of current methods and a two price system could cost producers about 35 million dollars in refunds and require 16 million dollars in annual rate cuts. The discussion centers on whether high cost producers deserve basing prices on those costs. The court considers if area price rules could force some firms to exit gas business or seek state commerce escape. The case traces to 1965 area-rate policy and appeals from Texas and New Mexico producers.
A seven session training course for Boy Scout instructors led by Jordan of Lovington will include a second session on December 14 followed by an overnight weekend on December 16-17. Additional sessions are planned for December 21 and 28 and December 11 and 18.
