United Press correspondent Russell Jones reports from Budapest that Hungary may face a new armed revolt as workers protest. Leaflets call for Imre Nagy’s return free elections withdrawal of Soviet troops and press freedom amid a tougher Janos Kadar regime.
Lovington FFA members will sell Christmas trees up to 12 feet tall at 1110 So. Main to fund club activities. Cal Alexander won top Kansas City honors with Ray Corbitt taking second. proceeds help cover trips, judging contests, and the annual parent and son banquet led by Louis Hohmann and Ronald Cunningham.
Carlsbad man Bob Pritchett will head the school tax division of the State Bureau of Revenue starting in January. The former lumber dealer replaces Joe Calloway, with Tony Luna announcing the appointment to lead the revenue bureau.
A two day Commons debate elections pits Eden against rebels in a bid to topple him yet save the Conservative Party. The plan hinges on a Labour censure and Conservative abstention on a confidence vote. Egypt Suez crisis spurs austerity and gasoline price climbs while Britain seeks US aid to delay postwar lend lease payments.
East German jails are said to be filling up with student leaders of an anti communist movement. A West Berlin private intelligence organization reports arrests in East Berlin Leipzig and Fireburg with more seizures expected.
Joe Lackey of Malco Reining Company was elected president of the New Mexico Oil and Gas Association at the Albuquerque convention. Ernest A. Hanson of Roswell became association treasurer, Roger L. Smith of Lovington was chosen vice president, with new members Senator Jack Danglade Lovington Tin Sibley Artesia D. D. Bodie Hobbs Levi Shiplet Fort Worth Texas on the executive committee. A U S Attorney General official described New Mexico oil conservation as a model for others and urged vigorous anti trust enforcement. The group adopted a nonpartisan water development resolution citing a survey by the South Spring Foundation of Roswell on reallocating water.
Lovington resident Mrs. Maxine F White has spent a year seeking renewal of her New Mexico driver's license. She received a 90 day temporary permit last December and has had no word from Santa Fe. City officials say tracer attempts have failed to produce an explanation or final license.
A two car crash one mile east of Lovington on State Road 83 yesterday morning caused no injuries. A. H. Martinez paid a $20 fine for driving with faulty brakes after rear ending J. W. McCrory’s westbound 1955 Chevy pickup as sheep crossed the road.
City manager Bill Harrison announced Lovington qualified for a federal grant to fund sewer system planning and basic construction. The 30 percent or $250,000 grant (whichever is larger) will cover engineers and planning costs, with total project estimated at about $300,000. Construction could start in 1958 with planning in spring 1957.
County ASC committeemen will be chosen at the convention to be held here Friday. The meeting is at 10 a.m. in ASC committee rooms. Delegates include Walter Anderson Sir Richards and Dudley inurpri ule, with alternates Neil Six form J R Hale and Curtis dones. From this convention will come the county chairman, assistant, the vice chairman, and one member.
Secretary of Health Marion Folsom said there is a very good chance Congress will pass a federal school construction bill next year. He noted President Eisenhower can win support from most Republicans and that both major parties backed the program in their 1956 platforms.
Mrs. W. W. Hall, operator of a Santa Fe clothing store, was accidentally shot and killed when a pistol among a box of books in her husband’s car discharged during unloading. Police say the weapon fired as it was moved from the vehicle.
French and Algerian reports describe a triple kidnapping by Algerian rebels after an ambush near the Moroccan border. Two Europeans and an Israeli were abducted, one European released after a robbery, and one person killed by a theater bombing in Algiers. Paris moves to boost Arab influence with equal municipal representation to calm dissent within Molet’s government.
The 1956 New Mexico highway death count reaches 358 with the latest fatality a 26 year old Farmington man Gordon Charles Hixson who died when his truck collided with another on the Aztec Animas River Bridge near Farmington. Last year at this time 338 persons had died in highway mishaps.
The state director of the American Legion pledges continued focus on proper training of youth. Albuquerque's Mike Alarid calls youth training the nation’s greatest obligation and supports a revision of the State Soldiers Exemption Act to curb chiseling and abuse.
The U N General Assembly approved a resolution calling for Hungary to permit observers from 54 nations, with a Friday deadline. The Soviet bloc and Yugoslavia opposed, India and the African Asian bloc abstained citing time limit concerns. Secretary General Hammarskjold said he sought permission to visit Budapest on December 16 but had not received a reply when the session adjourned.
Deputies issued 110 traffic tickets from Friday midnight to Sunday midnight as Sheriff J. G. McAdoo enforces road patrols for December. Notable fines included Thurman Hall at 100 mph for $95 plus costs and Jean Pate at 20 dollars for speeding.
The county sees a total cotton acreage of 28 816.8 acres for 1957 after a 1 912.8 acre increase. Letters mailed from the ASC office inform farmers of their allotments with red “important” stamps. Old farms receive a minimum allotment based on historic cotton plantings, plus a reserve for new farms and hardship cases with an application deadline of February 15, 1957.
Teachers from nine area schools will join the Citizenship Education Project Workshop on December 5 at the High School. Publisher Lincoln O Brien of New Mexico Newspapers Inc announces the sale of the Las Vegas Daily Optic to Thomas R Wright of Lima Ohio for an undisclosed price.
Ray Fisher of Lovington pleaded not guilty to selling liquor to a minor before Judge John R. Brand. Attorney A. M. Swarthout appointed for Fisher with trial set later. Wayne E. Wagner of Hobbs pleaded not guilty to auto theft as Howell Spear was named his defense counsel.
Justice of the Peace John W. Green heard four speeding cases netting $75. Kenneth Jackson was fined 45 for 85 mph, with W H Riddle, Charles E Sharp, and Howard Herman each fined 10. K B Roberts pled not guilty to a 50 dollar worthless check with bond 1000. Two drunken cases ended with A H Cloud paying 10 and Lee Garcia Uters 20, all fines plus 5 court costs.
Roy L. Frazier of Lovington escaped serious injury Monday morning when his truck rolled over on state road 31 west of Lovington. He exited the wreck with head and face lacerations and minor leg injuries as the 51 Ford, owned by A and W Construction, tore free from the cab and lay upright after miles of wreckage. The vehicle was on a job for R. E. A. at the time.
Sam Manley a Negro received a one year suspended sentence in district court after pleading guilty to manslaughter and negligent homicide in the July traffic death of Erwin Wiggins of Lexington. Wiggins died at Lea General Hospital after Manley in a speeding car rear ended his pickup. Mrs Wiggins was injured and a grandson gravely hurt while a granddaughter suffered lesser injuries. State Patrolman A W Payne arrested Manley and filed DWI reckless driving and manslaughter charges. Manley is reported to have served eight years in Texas prisons for murder from 1940 to 1946.
A major coffee company announces a three cent cut in wholesale coffee prices per pound with a spokesman saying a matching price decrease will follow at retail level.
Lovington Police Department and the New Mexico Traffic Safety Commission will hold a traffic safety meeting on December 14 at 3:30 p.m. in the Fireman's Recreation Hall in City Hall. Postal notices went to interested residents. others may attend. The meeting reviews traffic control procedures and safety methods as urged by the National Safety Council.
City clerk Osborne Fisher said his office will stay open 8 to 5 to help people renew or purchase new driver's licenses. Chauffeurs and other license holders should check their records now to ensure renewal before January first at city hall in the police department.
