Lovington residents rally around the annual Community Christmas Card project to raise about $2,000 for holiday lights and decorations. Florence Anderson plans to contribute before she leaves town, while local festivities including Nativity Scene displays brighten the town.

The Lovington project asks residents to donate funds instead of buying cards. Donations, typically 5 to 25 dollars, support Christmas lights and community holiday displays with Lea County Electric providing electricity and labor. U S Representative Harold Runnels of New Mexico criticizes Congress for delaying a final energy bill. He notes the failure to reach a compromise after a November return and warns that delaying endangers both domestic and international energy security.
Rep Harold Runnels welcomed Interior Secretary Cecil Andrus plan to authorize a 2600 mile Alaska crude pipeline from California to Texas via Jal New Mexico would receive Sohio allocation of 50 000 barrels daily and could be operational within a year if federal permits are granted
Detectives Ed Thomas and Dave Silva of Lovington PD helped a Lea County team in San Antonio question Paul Martinez, 24, a suspect in three Lea County crimes. Charges will be filed in Eunice for the Nov 16 Gladden shooting, Nov 21 Tri Corner Grocery robbery, and Nov 23 Hobbs theft. Martinez, held in San Antonio, linked to Cuero armed robbery. Texas to prosecute first, with potential later New Mexico action.
A two day rally for a December farmers strike drew far fewer attendees than hoped. Vernon Deines said about 50 100 tractors and farm vehicles joined the Dallas parade while Friday night crowds faded after ticket cuts. Organizers blamed communications gaps with media. The movement plans a Washington visit on December 10 to press government relief.
The New Mexico Farm and Livestock Bureau defeated a resolution backing a nationwide farm strike. Delegates debated strike wording while supporting expanded markets and producer training to lift farm prices. Re-elected to the state board were Bill Brockman and Warner Fluhman.
Seven winners appeared on the courthouse square to claim 100 gift certificates each from Saturday’s drawing. Drawings continue each Saturday before Christmas with a final draw December 22 totaling 3000 in certificates.
Lovington Jaycees host their second annual toy drive to help less fortunate children. Collection boxes are at Anthony's Turners Thrifty Drug Western Auto Gas Co of New Mexico Lea Neyeste Gibsons and City Eps. Hobbs Gas Co. faces a protracted rate increase hearing as new, conflicting exhibits and testimony are presented before the New Mexico Public Service Commission. The panel extended sessions to December 19 to review material claiming a higher past value and altered rate base, while objections over procedural rules persist.
Rep Manuel Lujan Jr announced at a Friday news conference in Albuquerque that he will run for re election to a sixth term. He represents New Mexico's 1st congressional district and is a member of the Republican party.
