Levington Man Arrested For Reckless Driving

Ronald Charles Askins of Levington was charged with reckless driving after his Mercury went off the road and into a bar ditch on State Road 18. Hobbs police booked him, and sheriff’s investigators towed the car eight miles south. damage details unclear.

Benge Home Destroyed By Gas Explosion

The three bed room Benge residence seven miles north and one mile west of town was destroyed by a gas and paint explosion Saturday evening. Mr Benge suffered burns to his right shoulder and arm while painting with a spray gun using bottled gas for pressure. Investigators suspect a pilot light may have been left burning causing the blast and fire to engulf the home and furnishings.

Tommy Dorsey Autopsy Details Death By Sleeping Pills

An autopsy report states band leader Tommy Dorsey died after taking sleeping pills to render himself unconscious. Chief toxicologist Abraham Stolman refused to confirm if the amount was lethal, noting the coroner must decide. Clinton minister beaten defending school integration

Rev Paul Turner, a 33 year old Baptist minister, escorted six Negro students to a Clinton Tennessee school this morning. He was beaten by a mob as police stood by outside the telegraph exchange. Turner was treated and said he will return tomorrow to continue escorting Negro students to school.

Lovington Man Charged After Early Morning Assault

Harvey Richard Hagan, 26, was arrested Sunday on assault and robbery charges after an incident at the 200 Club north of Lovington. Deputy James Robson said a motorist reported a fight over $5. Clark of Tatum said Hagan beat him and took $5. Bond set at $750 with Monday arraignment.

Thieves operated Saturday night in the 700 to 800 block of West Taylor, stealing a quantity of ladies undergarments from clothes lines. Several teachers and a woman were affected, with unnamed articles taken and no descriptions provided.

Kenneth Freeman of 202 West Ave Q Lovington reported two hubcaps stolen from his Oldsmobile Sunday. The theft occurred Saturday night while the car was parked at Lea County Electric Co. he told the sheriff's department.
