French Dam Burst Swamps Frejus Town
The 200 foot Malpasset Dam ruptured in the evening sending a 35 foot wall of water through Frejus on the French Riviera. Rescue teams report 104 bodies recovered and 200 feared dead as 45 million tons of water surged through the town.

Fails Named State Corporation Commissioner in New Mexico
G Y Fails of Albuquerque was appointed to the three member state corporation commission effective November 30 as James Lamb’s replacement. The 35 year old Democrat has not held public office before and will face next year’s elections to complete Lamb’s term ending in 1964. Fails holds a master’s in political science from Eastern New Mexico University and is adjutant for the American Legion.

The New Mexico Farm and Livestock Bureau wrapped up its three day convention in Tucumcari with resolutions on hunter and ranger relations education grazing fees and water rights. Delegates urged state game wardens police powers to curb private property damage and opposed changing State Fair dates and relocation plans. The group also backed new water rights purchases for military bases and university building funds while opposing federal education and farm labor measures and school consolidations. Thelma Inman was re elected chairwoman and S C Malone joined the board as the only new member.

Rabies Scare Quieted by Negative Lab Tests
A black cat suspected of biting a four year old Levington boy tested negative for rabies after state lab analysis. County health officer Carl Crutchfield noted follow up tests using mice and cat tissue serum would confirm the result, and no further threat was found.
