The State Land Office will send investigators into the Caballo Mountains above Truth or Consequences to examine a cavern of unknown size that may hold minerals and archeological value. State Land Commissioner Guyton Hayes noted miner Vernon Blythe’s claim that the cavern is larger than Carlsbad Caverns may prove unfounded. Atlantic Richfield Company honored the New Mexico Arizona District for a one million man hours with no lost time accident. Ninety district employees from Roswell Artesia Lovington and Hobbs attended a dinner at the Roswell headquarters marking the achievement.
DeMolay group will serve an Enchi lada Supper on Friday December 2 from 4 30 to 7 00 pm in the Electric Coop Community Room. Proceeds support sponsors and the local DeMolays. Admission is 1 00 for adults and 50 cents for children.
In Santa Fe officials warn 1967-68 Office of Economic Opportunity cuts will slash state funding for CAPs. CEO head Frank McGuire says $1.5 million less across New Mexico, with local poverty programs, Head Start, legal services, and Job Corps impacted. Teen guidance and cultural enrichment face severe reductions.
Gov-Elect David Cargo pledged cooperation with federal agencies including the Bureau of Land Management Forest Service the Bureau of Indian Affairs and the National Park Service. He noted New Mexico faces difficult resource development due to limited water and frequent floods and urged continued funding for watershed planning at $80 000 annually.
UPI reports Rex Whitton, head of the Bureau of Public Roads, will visit Albuquerque December 14 to examine the San Jon I-40 interchange proposals. U.S. Rep. Thomas Morris said Whitton will conduct a brief but thorough review with NM highway and San Jon officials, and Tucumcari lodging beforehand.
The Lovington area remains fair through Friday with warmer conditions on Friday. State records note a high of 67 at Deming and a low of 17 at Grants, while Lovington reached a 58 high at 3 15 and a 33 low at 3 30 p.m. Year to date rainfall stands at 15 19.
The State Fire Marshal reports Lovington will move from Classification 8 to improved Classification 7 effective December 2, 1966. This reclassification yields insurance savings averaging 4 cents per $100 for mercantile buildings and about $6 annually on a $13,500 private dwelling.
