J Hassler Strickland, manager of the Roswell Social Security Administration, will visit Lovington on Monday afternoon December 7 to aid residents applying for old age survivors or disability benefits and to provide information on the Social Security Act. He will be at the New Mexico State Employment Service office 110 S 1st from 1 30 p m to 4 30 p m. Remember there will be an increase in your social security tax next year. Beginning January 1 1960 the rate will be three percent for wage earners and their employers and four and one half percent for the self employed.

Posse To Meet For Year End Business Session

The Lea County Sheriff's Posse will hold its year end meeting next Monday at 7 30 p m in the courthouse meeting room to close out the year's business.

Airliner with 25 Aboard Falls in Snowstorm

President Eisenhower announced the resignation of Defense Secretary Neil H. McElroy and named Undersecretary Thomas S. Gates Jr. to succeed him. The move followed a National Security Council meeting during which McElroy received the Medal of Freedom for his service. The resignation is effective today.

Helicopter Rescues One Survivor in Mountain Crash

An Allegheny Airlines Martin 202, carrying 22 passengers and 3 crew, crashed into a Bald Eagle mountain near Williamsport while circling for a first approach in a snowstorm. One survivor was thrown clear and picked up by helicopter en route to Divine Providence Hospital. Search delayed by worsening weather.

Pioneer Spirit Wins Despite Wind at Caprock Scout Cook-Out

A hardy six members of Girl Scout Troop 25 braved cold and wind for a Caprock cook-out. Each girl lit and cooked her own meal from soups to fried chicken with no delays. After lunch, they hiked with compasses to practice navigation. Leaders Mrs Archie Roath and Mrs O L Quarles assisted, and participants included Patty Bailey Sandra Cammack Sharon Eskew Karen Quarles Linda Roath Pat Miles Betty Jane Stearman. The group later cleaned the Scout hut as a fundraising effort to finance a Santa Fe trip, led by Mrs W L Eskew.

Lovington CAP Observes 18th CAP Anniversary

Lovington Civil Air Patrol members marked the 18th CAP anniversary. The unit, started in 1941, includes Lt Jimmy Gregory and Lt Russell Harrison, cadets Johnny Mize and Rosalene Crawford, meeting biweekly at Old Central school. The nine day summer encampment at an Air Force Base trains cadets in military life.

City reports four building permits issued totaling 13 840 with Burnett Construction Co. getting the largest at 10 000 for 906 W. Ave F. Frontier Theaters Inc. 2 500 L C Camp 1118 W Harrison F M Bolding 602 W Ave G 990. November brings 1959 Lovington building total to 1 746 124 with one month remaining.

Levy To Talk At Banquet At UNM

University of New Mexico coach Marvin Levy will speak at the annual Football Parents Son banquet at 6 45 p m on December 10. President John Jordan announced the event and Levy will show game pictures from UNM s victory over the Air Force Academy. Awards will be given for best blocking back and lineman best defensive back and lineman hardest running back and most valuable player.

Methodist Bishop to Speak at District Meet in Clovis

Bishop W Angie Smith will be guest speaker at First Methodist Church at 7 30 p m Thursday for the Clovis District Conference. Dr Bob Houston will preside with sessions starting 2 p m Thursday and 9 30 a m registration. Mrs Smith and the bishop recently toured the world to visit Methodist mission stations. Dinner is served Thursday evening and lunch Friday for attendees.

Washington report shows the parity index at 77 percent in November, down from 79 in October, signaling lower purchasing power for farmers. Prices received for crops and livestock fell 2 percent by Nov 15, with hogs and cotton at decade lows, while costs at 297 percent of the base.

Lennie Jo Love Wins Lovington Theme Contest

Lennie Jo Love named winner of the Lovington Odd Fellow and Rebekah theme writing contest for her entry on United Nations Problems and Progress. Her theme advances to the State Contest where four girls and four boys will be chosen as winners. Local judges were Mrs. Peck Morgan, Mrs. Finis Heidel, and Winford Carlile.
