Kissinger called off a United Nations speech next week and said he would keep negotiating toward a peace pact between Egypt and Israel. He noted that the remaining issues are technically complex but not the main obstacles as talks extend beyond the original timetable.
The Soviet press denounces American volunteers as Middle East peace watchdogs and backs Portuguese communists. Pravda criticizes plans for U S civilians with sidearms in Sinai amid the Egypt Israel disengagement process, urging preservation of the U N observer force established in 1973.
Travelers Insurance Co will cancel malpractice coverage in New Mexico next March amid its participation in joint underwriting associations in other states. Rick Beitler of the New Mexico Medical Society says the move aims to avoid insuring people it would not normally cover. The firm is also stopping programs in Arizona and moving to end coverage in California and part of Texas. Beitler warns the action will pressure the Legislature to create laws to reestablish malpractice coverage, while noting a possible temporary NM joint underwriters plan. Rates in Texas reportedly rose 300 percent after such an association formed there.
The Lovington merchants plan a Saturday sidewalk sale on Sept. 6 with bar gains and attractions. A free Lea Theatre kids’ movie will screen first at 1 00 and again at 2 00 with Dan Blocker of Bonanza as star. Produce vendors may set up on the east side of the courthouse square. Love Street will be blocked off between Central and Washington and arrangements are through the Chamber of Commerce. KLEA Radio and the Lovington Leader will advertise participating merchants.
The International Gospel Music Festival comes to Parnell Auditorium with youth banjo champion Jim Henley of Hobbs appearing Friday night. Proceeds benefit Lea County Child Development Center as Wally Fowler and the Singing Christians and the Stamps Quartet perform. The festival continues the next night at Hobbs High School Auditorium.
John Wesley Sonny Neeld Jr., 38, a Lovington native and Artesia contractor worker, died in an oil field explosion south of Carlsbad at 2 20 p m Friday. Co worker uninjured. Services Tuesday at First Baptist Carlsbad. Burial Sunset Gardens Denton Funeral Home. Survivors include wife Betty, parents J W and Mrs J W Neeld, four sons, a daughter, a brother and a grandmother. The announcements note that Andrews and Pioneer will both be closed Monday for Labor Day. It was previously reported that Pioneer Steak House and Andrews Prescriptions would be open. those are incorrect.
Two Lovington residents were injured in weekend incidents at Llano Estacado hospital. A four year old boy named Ventura Montez shot himself in the chest with a .22 pistol found in the glove compartment of a waiting car and was treated by a Lovington ambulance after initial care at Dr Flores office. Isaac T Camacho failed to stop at a stop sign at North Third and Gunn, driving a vehicle through a fence into a Curry Pruit field and was also transported to the hospital by ambulance.
Will Agers Jr. will discuss The America of Will Rogers at the Lovington Womans Club guest night on October 16 in Parnell Auditorium at 7 30. Tickets cost 3 50 with no seat reservations. Agers lists a varied career including publisher foreign correspondent congressman and WWII tank commander.
The New Mexico Corrections Commission voted 6-1 to fire Secretary How ard Leach following Gov. Jerry Apodaca’s wishes. Gail Casey led the move citing insubordination and reduced effectiveness, with William Whitfield dissenting. Replacement likely to be decided Sept. 12 in Mountainair. Gov. Apodaca has recommended Mike Hanrahan for the post.
Santa Fe New Mexico report says three senior officials at the State Penitentiary are placed on leave as Attorney General Toney Anaya leads an inquiry. The investigation aims to prevent interference with inmate interviews and safeguard the probe from internal disruption.
Lovington Wildcat Booster Club will meet at 7 30 Tuesday night at the high school field house. Bob Kirby president asks all parents of students in Lovington schools athletic program to attend. A film of the Friday scrimmage between Lovington and Roswell will be shown.
