Lea county expects a strong cotton crop with 40009 bales forecast. Hobbs Army Air Base rumors resurface as unlikely. Thomas Doyle Vickers age 9 of East Avenue J at Your Home Trailer Court received minor injuries after stepping from the curb to cross South Main Street at Avenue J and colliding with a moving trailer. Chitten Eligie Colder of Robert Texas driving a 1954 GMC truck and trailer north on South Main Street was cited for the accident. The boy was taken to a local doctor by his mother Mrs James Vickers and treated for a skinned right hand, arm, and left leg.
Investigators probe the crash of an A3J Vigilante at Kirtland Air Force Base New Mexico. Both crew members Lt Cmdr James A Guggenbiller and Lt George F Biehl died. The plane carried classified material but no nuclear material aboard. The two men were attached to the Naval Weapons Facility at Kirtland.
West German President Heinrich Luebke arrived in West Berlin to study the Berlin crisis. He planned talks with Mayor Willy Brandt and the three Allied commandants and would visit the Marienfelde refugee camp. East German officials decried the visit as provocative while Western allies defended West Berlin’s four power status.
Lea County Fair Queen contest adds three applicants from Lovington Hobbs and McDonald bringing total entries to five. Lynda Allen 16 Tumtum High School student Sharon Kay Eady 20 Hobbs Odessa Junior College Stevie Ann Breckon 18 McDonald New Mexico University student this fall.
Preston Wayne Loomis, 45, received a citation for failure to yield the right of way after a minor collision at 12 15 p m Monday. Loomis pulled from a Quick Shop lot onto Ninth Street and hit Aubrey Melton Holt, 48, of 1524 W Polk. Damage totaled about 50 to the Ford and 15 to Loomis's International truck.
Four state land tracts sold Tuesday at Lovington courthouse by state land office fieldmen Guyton Hayes and Clifford Stevenson. Sales totaled $164,300 with parcels near Tatum McDonald and Arco Land Company of Santa Fe. Next sale scheduled for September.
In Carlsbad New Mexico Billy Nichols was cleared after 24 hours of questioning in the deaths of 13 year old Mattie Restine and 14 year old Patty Sue Pritz. Nichols remained in custody as authorities check for charges in Tennessee and nearby states.
Lea County Fair Parade entries are coming in slowly says Parade Marshall Slim Hester. Only 12 floats have been entered to date and officials hope all businesses clubs and individuals enter before the September 5 deadline at the Lovington Chamber of Commerce office. The goal is the biggest and best parade in Lea County history.
Officials from the U S Department of Agriculture held a Denver hearing to gauge beet growers views on possible domestic sugar beet acreage restrictions in 1962. About 200 attendees heard opposition from Texas New Mexico and Nebraska representatives and U S congressmen. No decision was announced but a list of suggestions was offered including state allotments and a national reserve to cover shortages.
In a recent transaction Electric Heat and Supply Co. purchased Conn Sheet Metal Co. from D. P. Conn. The acquired company will be moved to the Electric Heat and Supply Co. building where its equipment will be operated.
The annual steak fry honoring Lovington Public Schools teachers will be at 5 30 PM Saturday September 2 at the W A Anderson ranch north of Lovington. Hoss the W A Andersons the C C Yearwoods the Lester Al stons the R B Moores and the R E Smiths invite Lovington School Lay Committee members and spouses to attend.
Former New Mexico governor John Burroughs says he will take an active part in both the Democratic primary and general election. U.S. Senator Clinton P. Anderson doubts Burroughs will run for governor in 1962 and lists other possible Democratic candidates.
