The American Independent Party adopted a platform opposing abortion busing revenue sharing and the federal income tax. The convention moved to select a running mate for Lester Maldox with candidates William Dyke and Mrs Fileen Shearer leading. New Mexico officials, including Mrs Phillips, criticized Maddox as unacceptable for the ballot and planned to nominate a different presidential candidate for November.
