Increasing cloudiness through Wednesday with a 30 percent chance of showers late today and again Wednesday. Winds rise at night, cooler by Wednesday with Lovington readings from 62 to 81.
Gov. David Cargo says two Democrats on the New Mexico highway commission are weighing top candidates for two vacancies. Tom Trotter of Albuquerque and John Thaxton of Raton say all candidates will be considered. Former State Rep. Joe Leonard and former Las Cruces Mayor James E. Neleigh are named as leading possibilities. Cargo noted the appointee should expect to stay on the commission, and he might replace Gen. Hugh Milton or John Sudderth.
Lovington police logged two traffic incidents Monday. A 1962 Chevrolet Corvair driven by Moreno Marquez, 38, was struck on the side by a 1959 Ford driven by William Lewis Wells, 18, as Wells allegedly ran a stop sign at Jefferson and Third. Damages totaled $200.
Federal troops arrived in Culpeper Virginia to enforce an order banning Nazi insignia and uniforms at the burial of George Lincoln Rockwell. Military police protected federal property as mourners, including pallbearers in Nazi attire, gathered outside the cemetery gates.
Lovington hosts revival led by Bobby Mankin of Marshall Texas and Ful Fenner from Decatur Texas. The events run September 3 through September 10 with morning services at 10:00 and evening services at 7 30. Say s Rev Cass.
A 13 plaintiff civil action in U.S. District Court accuses the New Mexico State Police and three officials of holding detainees in a barbed-wire enclosure with water from a sheep pond. The suit, filed Monday and partly funded by the ACLU, concerns post arrest enforcement actions.
Enrollment at Lovington Public Schools stands at 3058 as of Friday, remaining about in line with prior predictions. The district continues to project stable growth and plans modest staffing adjustments to meet demand.
A county wide water conference planned for Lovington tonight is postponed to Thursday September 7 at City Hall 7 30 pm. Lovington Chamber of Commerce and city officials spearhead the event to unite Lea County towns on long term water solutions.
Funeral services for Floyd Ernest Dickerson will be held Wednesday afternoon in Smith-Rogers chapel with Rev. W M Beauchamp and Rev. Mannie Loveau officiating. Burial will be in Resthaven Cemetery. Dickerson, 70, died Monday at Palmer County Hospital Friona after a short illness. He was born in Kaufman Texas and moved to Lovington in 1914. He helped start the first telephone service light plant and ice plant. He ran a trucking business and ranching in Caprock. After retirement he moved to Friona. He married Minnie Wise in 1917. He is survived by his wife Minnie of Friona two sons Weldon Friona and Milton Lovington a daughter Dorothy Tarkington Hallettmwere three sisters and five grandchildren. Pallbearers are A D Frier Melvin Fort Kenneth Lyone Lyman Graham Allen Russell Roscoe Caldwell. Honorary pallbearers are many friends.
Reese Greaves, the postmaster at Lovington, announced that applications for examination for Substitute Clerk and Carrier positions will be accepted until further notice. US citizens only. open to men and women. Apply at the Lovington Post Office. Test time and place to be notified. Starting salary 2.64 per hour with raises to 3.17 and 3.60. Equal consideration regardless of race creed color national origin or sex.
Harold Runnels owner of Runnels Mud Company purchased the Bel Aire office building in Hobbs from Malcolm Shaw. The north Hobbs structure with 29 offices will house four Runnels offices and rentals for the rest. Runnels plans leases with Lovington firms and keeps Lovington staff in place while expanding operations. He has opened a Jar office yard and warehouse to support South Lea County work and his firm continues drilling product supply for ultra deep wells in the Delaware Basin.
Funeral services for Mrs Oma McCully were held at the Nazarene Church in Tatum today at 2 00 p m conducted by Rev A W Myers of Clovis burial will be at Guymon Oklahoma. Mrs McCully 82 was mother of Mrs Edith Perot of Tatum. Survived by son Curtis McCully of Denver two brothers four sisters six grandchildren and a number of great grandchildren.
Lee Newton Benson, 53, died early today at Lovington General Hospital after a weeklong heart attack. Funeral services will be Thursday at 10 AM at Northside Baptist Church with G. Turner officiating. Burial at Resthaven Cemetery. A World War II Army veteran, he belonged to Lovington Masonic Lodge 46 AF and AM. Survived by his wife Jean, two sons Bobby and Danny, mother Nora Childress, brother Frank Wayne, and sister Beulah Collier.
