The State Traffic Safety Administrator announced a September 1 1957 start for a strict drivers license policy. After three moving violations in one year the license will be suspended or revoked. The measure, led by C L Mears under Governor Mechem, aims to curb traffic deaths and improve enforcement under the Motor Vehicle Act.
Hobbs lawyers Rose and Johnson filed a petition to move Juan Cisneros’s first degree murder trial from the 5th Judicial District covering Eddy Shavez Lea counties to another district. They cited excessive publicity as hindering a fair trial for the Lovington case involving Ballay Baley, the cab driver killed last June near Denver City.
The first bale of cotton for 1957 was ginned in Lea County yesterday. Lee Mitchell grew the staple on Woody Acres and it was gin ned by Cotton Gin number 2, Bill Craft operator. Weighing 501 pounds the bale was ready for sale before closing time Wednesday. It is said to have graded 11/32 strictly medium.
A meeting for all interested in Extension Classes for college credit will be held in the Lovington Junior High School Library on Wes Jefferson Avenue at 7 00 P M Thursday September 5th.

In Washington informed sources say the AFL-CIO filed charges against Hoffa and three Teamsters leaders signaling a potential Teamsters walkout if Hoffa takes the presidency. The complaint also named Dave Beck Frank Bruster and Sidney Brennan as defendants in the union dispute.
Police arrested 32 year old door to door salesman Joseph Tito of Astoria New York on charges of calling the Perry Como home at Sands Point Long Island and threatening the singer's three children. Tito was identified as the anonymous caller after Mrs Como reported repeated visits over about a year and a recent call warning they would be dead by sunrise.
The State Welfare Board reports Colorado led the nation with the highest old age pension in 1956. The average monthly pension was $95.26, totaling $58,313,587 for 365,000 pensioners, contributing to a welfare department bill over $77 million. Connecticut's pension was the second highest at $90.66 per month.
Congressional conferees settle on 2 billion 768 million dollars for foreign aid, about 1 billion below the President's initial demand. House and Senate members, after deadlock, reach a compromise adding 244 million to the House figure, with the total still 800 million under Eisenhower’s minimum security funding.
Massachusetts Senate passes a resolution to clear the names of six Salem witches hanged in 1692. The measure, awaiting Governor Foster Furcolo’s signature, argues the trials may have been illegal and the verdicts unjust, removing the historical label.

A one year old admitted dope addict admitted to ten break ins an attempted burglary and passing bogus checks. Police say the man from Albuquerque acted due to narcotic need stating he requires 12 capsules of heroin daily costing about sixty dollars. Assistant DA Grammer noted over half of Albuquerque thefts are linked to narcotics.
Louis Girard said he was surprised by defense counsel Itsuro Hayashi as he argued to dismiss the Japanese manslaughter trial of William Girard. Hayashi claimed Girard was on duty when a metal scavenger was killed, challenging Japanese court jurisdiction. The trial adjourned until September 6.
The DUN & Bradstreet wholesale food index increases over the prior week and shows a 4.6 percent rise from the year-ago level. The price per pound of 31 foods used generally stands at 6.32 dollars, up from 6.29 last week and 6.04 a year earlier.
The House approved a hardship immigration bill admitting over 60 000 immigrants to the United States in two years. It does not grant resident status to 28 000 Hungarian refugees or liberalize the main quota. The bill returns to the Senate for technical amendments.
President Eisenhower signed a bill Tuesday increasing compensation for veterans with service connected disabilities. The measure boosts all basic rates by about 10 percent and adds more money for dependency allowances.
Federal grand jury in Tacoma Washington indicts Dave Beck president of the Teamsters on evading income taxes for 1951 to 1953 amounting to 184000. Five co defendants include Beck Jr Norman Gessert Fred Verschueven Sr Nathan Shefferman and Shelton Shefferman. Beck says he has not heard of the Tacoma indictment and that if true it relates to income taxes.
Qualifying rounds begin at Las Cruces Country Club for the 43rd Annual New Mexico Amateur Tourney with about 150 golfers over four days. Defending champion is Hobbs golfer Don Nix as match play begins tomorrow and a Labor Day finish is planned.
Brother Benildus, founder of St Michael's College in Santa Fe, died yesterday in Los Angeles from a heart attack. Rosary services are set in the St Michael's College Chapel for tomorrow night and a funeral mass will be at St Franci's Cathedral in Santa Fe Saturday at 8 am with Archbishop Edwin V Byrne presiding. Interment will be at Rosario Cemetery in Santa Fe.
Chiang Kai-shek of Nationalist China denounces peaceful coexistence with communism in a letter to Rep. Carrol Kearns. He warns the world risks disaster if itToy s with peaceful co existence with international communism. Kearns read the letter into the congressional record. Also read was a letter from South Korea's Syngman Rhee warning Japan over Okinawa and urging long US control of the island.
A KB-50 Air Force tanker crashed and burned about ten miles east of Clovis near the Texas border after takeoff during a practice refueling. Six crewmen bailed out and were taken to Cannon Air Force Base for medical aid. none were badly hurt. An investigation has begun to determine the cause. The crash occurred near a rural mail carrier on a country road a short distance from Bovina, Texas.
A nine year old Negro girl delivered a two and a half pound boy at the University of Arkansas Medical Center in Little Rock. The preterm baby was placed in an incubator and has a reasonable chance to survive. Dr Eve Dodge reported the mother was born in another state in March 1948, making her the department’s youngest mother on record.
Hobbs and Ballinger clash in a battle for Southwestern League lead as Ballinger trails Olers by one game after a 9 2 win over Lamesa. Carlsbad beat Lamesa 3 2 with Ray Patterson two run homer in seventh. Oilers win on two unearned runs in ninth. John Young singles home winning run.
Funeral services for John Dutton age 53 of 1210 Clinton are set for Saturday at 2 pm in the First Methodist Church Hobbs. Dutton died Wednesday after collapse and was employed by Gulf Oil Co. He is survived by wife Sally, son George, daughter, two brothers and two sisters. Dr Lindsey Trone to officiate with Griffin Funeral Home handling arrangements.
A Duncanville, Texas resident, Thomas Arthur Naylor, died in a one car crash on State Road 3 about 10 miles north of Questa in a construction zone. State Police cited excessive speed as the cause as the car failed to negotiate a curve and overturned. The fatality pushed New Mexico’s 1957 road toll to 288, 33 more than a year earlier today.
A 56-year-old Lubbock cattle buyer Herbert Norris apparently murdered his wife Ruth Jane 48 and then shot himself yesterday in Lubbock. Norris had earlier shot his estranged wife and died from his self-inflicted wound.
In a surprise move Thurmond keeps the Senate in session from 7:54 p m until morning, reading election laws of 48 states to block the civil rights bill. Republican Leader Knowland warns against further delay while Eisenhower eyes adjournment and a Newport vacation if both houses finish today.
Shelby Tucker of Pass Christian Mississippi says Communist authorities threaten deportation for not surrendering his passport during a Red China tour. The U S State Department orders 42 visiting Americans to return home and stamps passports valid only for return, creating a dilemma between Chinese law and U S policy.
Farmer Eddie Whitaker recounts a practical joke gone wrong in Ex field North Carolina when a neighbor Sonny Speller, dressed as an escaped convict, ordered him to strip. Police arrested the prankster on the spot and the judge fined Whitaker $22 while ordering a two year joke ban.
