Dr. Walter Hopkins of Lovington is listed among the ER doctors working on a rotating basis with on call staff physicians providing backup and follow up care through patients’ personal physicians.
Federal and state officials said radioactive and heavy metals have not harmed Gallup and Grants water but surface water in Rio del Puerto and Rio ges areas is unfit for domestic irrigation or use. A final report will be issued next month with conclusions and recommendations.

Buford Hargrove 43 of 405 w Ave Q is in stable condition at Llano Estacado Medical Center after an apparent heart attack Monday at WHB where he works. Lovington ambulance sirened after 3 PM as Det. Sgt. Ed Thomas and Larry Arthur responded. Officers arrived first and found a man not breathing, CPR was given until breathing returned. ambulance staff continued care en route to the hospital with Thomas driving.
Hunters seeking details on the upcoming deer season are invited to an open meeting in Hobbs on August 28 at 7 30 p m. The New Mexico Department of Game and Fish will explain season settings and answer questions at the American Legion Hall.
Former Ethiopian emperor Haile Selassie died in his sleep at age 83 in Addis Ababa. He ruled the country for 57 years as the world’s longest serving monarch before being overthrown by a military coup last year. Radio Ethiopia announced his death.
A polio case in El Paso Texas and reports of disease in parts of Mexico spurred a major immunization drive by state health officials in Dona Ana County. Dr. Victor Zalma, director of the State Health Agency, announced 6,000 doses of oral vaccine shipped to Dona Ana County and urged immunization clinics in the area.
Truth or Consequences New Mexico police Sgt Richard Potter was arrested by state police on charges of receiving stolen property in a major burglary probe. Potter’s brother Wesley and four others were previously arrested with alleged possession of thousands in stolen items. Hamilton-Schaaf arraigned Potter, released on own recognizance. other suspects jailed in Truth or Consequences.
