In Saigon the military revolutionary committee failed for a second day to name a new chief of state to replace Nguyen Khanh. Religious riots raged in Da Nang as Vietnamese attacked an American hospital and beat four patients to death.
Weather for Lovington calls for partly cloudy conditions on Thursday and Thursday night with a possible late afternoon or evening thunder shower. Temperatures remain near the high 90s, with a Thursday high around 97 and a Thursday night low near 72.
President Lyndon B. Johnson, nominated by acclamation at the Democratic National Convention in Atlantic City, announces Sen. Hubert H. Humphrey of Minnesota as his running mate. Johnson delivers an upbeat acceptance style address and predicts victory over Goldwater and the Republicans.
Winners in the Lea County Fair parade may collect trophies at the Lovington Chamber of Commerce Office. Identified by numbers only, the top bike entry was the Wait For Yogi bike in first place, number 14 earned second, number 17 won Best Dressed Cowboy, and number 21 won Best Dressed Cowgirl.
Lea County's Fair and Rodeo opened with a mammoth downtown Levington parade and a barbecue for 2000 attendees. Record crowds filled the fair grounds for opening events and the first performance, with officials noting rising entries across livestock divisions.
The Health Office promotes a broad immunization program citing risks from diphtheria tetanus measles polio and whooping cough. It stresses up to date vaccines as essential, urges parents to act, and notes growing importance of preventive care amid rising vaccine options.
Lovington schools welcomed 181 teachers and 92 staff to the new term at a high school ceremony attended by city representatives, chamber of commerce, school board members, civic groups, press and radio. Earlier, 20 new teachers were toured around the city in a Tuesday afternoon event sponsored by the chamber.
Lea County Fair outlines events for Thursday August 27 with judging across Swine Crops and Garden Handicraft Sheep and a Rodeo. Friday August 28 includes Beef and Dairy judging a Junior Livestock Auction and a Rodeo. Saturday August 29 features Quarterhorse and Appaloosa shows at McClure Arena and a 9:00 p.m. dismantle of fair exhibits.
President Johnson told the Democratic convention that he looks forward to an overwhelming victory in November. He thanked the delegates and said he would be with them tomorrow for his formal acceptance address. He praised Kennedy's legacy and the platform as reflecting past performance and future prosperity and peace. Continued on page 2.
