Football parents plan first get-together at 7 30 p m Monday in the High School gym per R P McNabb. Sonny Graham brings web fed offset printing to Lovington promising payroll and newspaper quality gains. Local figures share medical, travel, and business notes including surgeries and a farm tour success.
Howard Marler announces a Pony League meeting on 7-30 at City Hall to elect officers for the 1962 season. The session touches on governance and upcoming league plans.
Four cars sustained damage in a South Seventh Street collision involving a 1961 Chrysler driven by Ruth Ann McDaniel of 805 W Avenue D. No injuries were reported. McDaniel's car struck a parked 1961 Ford Falcon owned by Orel Boteler of 405 S First, which in turn hit a 1957 Buick also owned by Boteler, then another Buick owned by Johnny Elliott. The wreckage blocked the street until a second wrecker arrived.
Connie Cunningham aged 17, daughter of Mr and Mrs J L Cunningham of Lovington, enters the 1961 Lea County Fair Queen Contest as the second participant. A high school senior and longtime horsewoman, she is active in the Lovington High School band and was chosen to tour Europe with the High School Band of America this summer.
Fall semester registration for Loevington Community College begins at 6 00 p m on September 11 at Lovington High School Instruction starts September 13 The fully accredited branch of Eastern New Mexico University offers new courses including wood working Conversational Spanish and business topics for noncredit students Courses cover English history government algebra typewriting shorthand accounting psychology general business chemistry and more
M C VanZant, 29, confined in Lea County jail facing a charge of obtaining money by false pretenses. He was arrested at 4 p.m. Friday and is to appear at 1 p.m. September 1 before Judge Robert Bensing in Hobbs.
Announcement reports W H Graham of Farwell Texas will become publisher and part owner of the Lovington Leader on September 1. Jerry Stoltz remains a stockholder and will devote full time to Office Supply Co while Jack Simmons continues as partner.
Charlie Adrian May and Harold Eugene Nall appeared before Justice of Peace Reese Greaves Friday afternoon after arrest at 4 p.m. Tuesday at 410 W Harrison. May pled guilty to drink and vagrancy and received 30 days. Nall, 36, charged with drunk vagrancy and sodomy, pleaded not guilty and is held in jail in lieu of $1,000 bail.
L C Roye of 710 W Ave H Lovington completed a 10 by 12 foot underground concrete fallout shelter behind his home designed to protect the Roye family of four for an indefinite period. Built by E H Kelch Construction with 8 inch walls and 12 inch reinforcement, it features a fiberglass insulated steel entrance, ventilation with a hooded filter, city and well water, a gas powered auxiliary unit with weeks of supply, a septic system, and plans for stair access. An open house for Lovington residents will be held from 1 to 6 p m today.
The United States orders 76,500 reservists to active duty by Oct 1 to bolster forces in Europe and support Kennedy’s plan to grow the military to 2,743,000. Army calls total 46,500. Navy 6,400. Air Force 23,600. Units in 44 states prep for extended duty amid the Berlin crisis.
Lovington chamber of commerce led an agriculture tour Friday with about 175 participants at five area farms ending at a Cotton Warehouse barbecue. Jim Cole of New Mexico State University spoke while tours highlighted bunker silos, irrigation pipelines, leveled fields, Bermuda pasture, sugar beet plots with experimental trials, and a large 800 head feedlot with irrigated pasture.
Mrs. C. R. Johnston of 115 S. 4th St. wins this week's ad rime for Lovington. She and her husband, a Jackson Chevrolet employee, have lived in Lovington three years and celebrate local shopping with the slogan Future Progress Follows Our Shopping Policies.
The 28th annual Open Range Cowboy Reunion will be held September 23 at the Fair Building in Lovington starting at 10 a m. The Open Range Cowboy Association sponsors the event with Henry Record of Monument as president. A basket lunch will be served at noon. the association provides bread beef pickles and coffee.
Across the nation the first armed forces reservists and National Guardsmen summoned to active duty since the Korean War accepted orders with a stoic sense of duty. Lt. John Bickell of the 250th Ordnance Company in Marysville Kansas, said his unit was not originally designated for alert status, and many men face personal sacrifice as mobilization disrupts families and careers. Airman 2. C Robert A Sullivan of North Providence Rhode Island spoke for many about anxious spouses, noting his wife understands the necessity of the call to service.
