Lea County continued to lead oil activity with one more well than the prior week, totaling three active rigs. Eddy County shows nine rigs, down by three from last week.
In Arkansas a special legislative session opens as Gov Faubus outlines a five part program amid renewed Negro attempts to enroll at Hall and Central High in Little Rock. Federal rulings loom while other states move on school admissions and integration actions.
Police report two break-ins in Lovington over the weekend. Shorty’s Drive-In on south Main was robbed of 15 dollars plus a pay telephone, cigarette machine, and juke box taken or damaged. a typewriter also stolen. At Rudd’s Cafe, a rear dirty linen box was pried open and tablecloths and uniforms taken. Authorities say entry was gained via a pried rear door and clocks show the owners found damage on Monday morning.

UPI reporters Bryce Miller and photographer John Jenkins were expelled from Little Rock School Superintendent Virgil T. Blossom’s office under pressure. Blossom apologized later for the rough treatment saying he was under pressure. In the waiting room they encountered a Black family seeking school transfer.
In New Mexico, work begins ahead of Project Gnome the planned underground AEC detonation near Carlsbad set for next summer. Crews erect a radio antenna and move a trailerhouse for Atomic Energy Commission staff as road access is prepared to salt beds for the Plowshare program. Core drilling has started and a 1,200 foot tunnel into underground salt beds will be built for future tests. The jackrabbits are disappearing.
O. B. Pee of Brady Texas died of a heart attack in Livingston on Saturday night at about 11 30 while visiting a son Wayne Pee and riding with his niece along South Main. A local doctor pronounced him dead at the scene. An inquest was directed by Justice of the Peace Reese Greaves.
In a pre-dawn Lovington raid on a Hill cafe, Elijah Taylor and leasee L C Love were cited for illegal possession of alcohol for resale. Police confiscated 9 cases beer 1 whiskey and 1 wine as officers testified to purchases at C and T Liquor Store and a storage room lock forced during the search.
Jury drawing for the fall term is scheduled for September 2 with jurors to report on September 22. A separate docket will be set for non jury cases on the same day.
Alice Parker of 513 West Ave. S. pleaded guilty in city court to mollesting an officer after admitting the burglary hoax. She paid a $25 fine as officers investigated for almost three hours before discovering the money was taken from a family piggy bank and the entry was staged.
UPI reports Washington urges nationalist China to refrain from retaliatory steps against the mainland despite Communist forces attacking the Quemoy islands with air and artillery. The Defense Department directed the U S Seventh Fleet to take normal precautionary defensive measures.
Justice of the Pesce Reese Greaves issued 240 days in jail and $225 in fines. Wayman Calhoon Doris Grundy each got 90 days for vagrancy. Ruby Parker received 60 days for fourth drunkenness. Love and Tay lor fined $100 each for illegal sale and possession of alcohol. McMillian fined $100 for reckless driving. Cochran paid $110 with DWI and license charges. Shipman fined $25 for reckless driving. Carsen and Terrien paid $5 each. Leon Wilson fined $10 costs for speeding. Tommy Humphrey paid $15. Juvenile Sue Kennedy paid costs for driving without a license.
A hitchhiker identified as Patrick Ruddy, 58, of Fort Worth Texas was struck and killed on U S 66 in Albuquerque. The driver Fred N Willens 33 was identified. The Roswell fatality was James A Travis Jr 27 who died from brain injuries from an incident last Friday on US 70 380.
Francis Jackson, held at Lea County jail in Hobbs, was rushed to a hospital suffering from internal bleeding. Sheriff Jewell McAdoo confirmed the inmate faced a charge about which few details were available.
Ross L. Malone a Roswell New Mexico attorney and oil and gas law expert was chosen as president of the American Bar Association at the Los Angeles convention. He succeeds Charles S. Rhyne and will take office Friday. The 244 delegates also elected Sylvester C. Smith Jr. chairman of the House of Delegates and re elected Joseph D. Calhoun as secretary and Harold H. Bredell as treasurer. A 16 member Board of Governors was chosen with Robert K. Bell among the appointees. Elected from the Third Federal Judicial Circuit was E. Dixie Beggs.
