State Highway Commission approves speed reductions on 380 miles of two lane roads across 43 zones. daytime limits commonly set to 60 mph and 65 in some areas, nighttime 55 mph. US 66 and other routes included. sign crews tasked to post changes statewide.
The New Mexico field phase of an accident cost study, conducted by the State Highway Department with U.S. Bureau of Public Roads, begins this week in Lea County. Surveys target automobile accidents past year and will use interviews and mailed questionnaires, with 269 cases identified and results to aid traffic signs and signals nationwide.
Otero County Commissioners banned surgeon Dr Levon Akopiantz and his patients from Gerald Champion Memorial Hospital in Alamogordo for disrupting hospital operations. Akopiantz, a New York City trained physician, challenged the ban in district court claiming no local practice site except Ruidoso Hospital 50 miles away.

A 24 year old Melrose New Mexico man John Doyle Burton admitted to State Police he killed Culliford Freshout a Cannon Air Force Base airman by striking him with a car jack and disposing of the body near Clovis after a late night fight. Burton was arrested in Albuquerque on a stolen car charge and turned over for questioning as authorities search for the victim.
Nationalist China's Chief U. S. staff warns Formosa remains in danger from the Communist menace. He says the Reds could rely on Soviet supplied atomic arms for any invasion, keeping the threat acute despite changes on the island.
Jess Benson, chairman of Lea County War Memorial, asks for help to locate World War I veterans from the area who enlisted from Eddy or Chavez counties. People should check the Memorial and, if needed, leave name and address at the County Clerk's office. Benson notes 219 names exist but more may be listed.

A 23 year old man with self inflicted knife wounds was found in the back seat of a car near Lovington. His relatives, including a wife and son, transported him after learning he was ill near Artesia. The injuries were days old and infection had set in. Police suspect mental illness and the man was sent to Portales for care.
