A 20 year old French student Chantal Vitalis had a purse with 400 dollars and a passport returned after two men gave her a ride. The purse was left in a pickup truck and found by a man who read of the incident in a local paper. The driver declined any reward, and Chester Bruce Hanson praised the honesty shown.

New Mexico Crime Up 8.4 Percent in 1976 Report
The New Mexico State Police reported total crime rose 8.4 percent from 1975 to 1976. Violent crime increased 6.7 percent while nonviolent crime gained 8.6 percent. Murders fell from 143 to 110, burglaries dropped to 19,336, and rapes, robberies, assaults, larceny and motor vehicle theft all rose. Property stolen totaled 25.3 million with 8.1 million recovered.
