President Nixon announced Henry A. Kissinger will become secretary of state on Sept. 3 while remaining presidential assistant. Rogers said he stayed four and a half years to finish Indo china, the Middle East, Latin America, and Europe, despite Watergate tensions. He denied resigning over the scandal and stressed legal rights and national security.
The State Game Commission sets fall and winter seasons for waterfowl and other birds across Pacific and Central Flyways. Ducks run Oct 20-Jan 20 with five per day and ten in possession. geese limits vary by county and flyway. quail, pheasant, and crane seasons listed with specific dates and daily bag limits.
Charleston police received a call from a housewife who feared her husband had been harmed after hearing breathing and a thud on the line. Officers found nothing amiss as the man had simply fallen asleep during the call.
Bill Chambers of Maliamar underwent major surgery Wednesday morning in Hobbs. Mrs Chambers and a son and his wife from Pennsylvania were at his bedside. Doctors report he is doing fine and, if no complications arise, may be able to go bird hunting this fall.
Col James Lindberg Hughes, a retired Air Force officer and former prisoner of war, announces he will seek the Republican nomination for New Mexico governor. He plans to retire Aug 31 from active duty and campaigns statewide ahead of the 1974 primary. Joe Skeen is also running for the GOP nomination.
Detective St. Danny Dunning leaves the Hobbs Police Department criminal investigation bureau to become a Lea County deputy sheriff. He says the move follows another recent resignation of Police Chief Rae Neal. Dunning is the third Hobbs detective to resign since March.
Fair conditions continue in the Eastern Plains and Central Mountains with isolated thunderstorms in the afternoon and evening through Friday. Temperatures rise to the upper 60s to mid 90s in Clovis Tucumcari Artesia and Lovington with Santa Fe reaching mid 80s.
Members of the Governor's Task Force on Energy toured the Natural Gas Pipeline Company of America Lovington compressor station, 17 miles west of Lovington. The group included M N Wink Larry Caudill Don Allen S E Mantes Guy Jameson Paul Thompson Peter Hanagan and Ralph Peterson. The 6000 HP facility drew interest in its operation.
Governor Bruce King reappointed Dr. Jodie C. Smith of Hobbs to the New Mexico Law Enforcement Academy Board. The NMJC president’s new four year term begins July 1, following the prior term’s expiration. The board oversees the Santa Fe based academy and includes a higher education faculty seat.
A Los Lunas woman Mary A. Herrera 30 died after a car crash on NM 47 and a hit and run driver struck her as she walked from the vehicle. Arizona man Edward James Reilly 60 died in a separate Santa Rosa area crash. The state traffic toll reached 361 for the year.
Santa Fe New Mexico Attorney General David Norvell warned that continued prime rate increases may violate the state usury statute setting a 10 percent cap on secured loans. He urged potential legislative action and possible suspension of the ceiling to address inflationary pressures on banks.
Athletic Director George Blackard says season tickets for Lovington High School football are on sale at the administration office. Season ducats cost eight dollars and cover eight home games. The 1973 Wildcats open at home versus Jal on September 14 with further home games against Seminole Texas September 21, Roswell Goddard October 12, and Portales November 2.
