The State Department announced 24 American news organizations, including United Press, may send one reporter each to the China mainland for six months or longer on an experimental basis. China has made no commitments, and U.S. officials say entry depends on Beijing’s approval.
Dr Levon A Akopiantz of Eunice sues Gerald Champion Memorial Hospital in Alamogordo seeking court relief to lift a ban on his and his patients' access to hospital facilities. He alleges the ban was unjust and malicious and names the Otero County Hospital Association and county commissioners as defendants. An earlier suit in Lea County remains unheard.
Heavyweight champion Floyd Patterson defeated former Olympic winner Pete Rademacher by sixth round knockout after seven knockdowns and a brief knockdown in round two. The bout, held in Seattle, grossed 243000 dollars with a net of 200556, ending at 2 minutes 57 seconds of the sixth round.
Second Place Ballinger returns to top spot after a 4 to 2 win over Hobbs, aided by two runs on one single in the eighth. Walt O'Neil walked, stole third, and Stubby Greer followed with a double steal. Bill Tinger hit a homer and later drove in a run. Carlsbad defeated Lamesa 13 to 7.
A cool front moves into New Mexico bringing hotter? cool air and more thunder showers to the northeast tonight. Temperatures stay around 80 in the north and 95 in the south, with Carlsbad and Roswell at 93 yesterday and Las Vegas and Ruidoso at 76. Thundershowers favored mountain areas. the outlook calls for fair today, cooler NE tonight, and a partly cloudy weekend with moisture in the south and east.
U S scientists fired the 13th device of the 1957 series named Doppler from a plastic balloon. The 10 000 ton yield produced a mushroom cloud 20 000 feet high with an orange glow visible in Los Angeles Salt Lake City Las Vegas and Reno. No fallout expected as the fireball did not touch ground.
A sleepy driver, O. G. Wilson of Lone Pine California, veered off Artesia highway 14 miles east of Lovington around 2 a m. His pickup rolled and stopped after a rollover. He suffered minor bruises and lacerations, with no damage figures provided for the 1956 vehicle.
State Director of Finance and Administration recovered 4359 dollars of state funds deposited with a Roswell finance company. Ed Hartman made the recovery from money raised by Roswell Guard unit wrestling shows and later subcontracted to a chief warrant officer. An attorney general opinion held the funds should go to the state treasury and the Armory Board fund. Hartman delayed collection to hear local Armory officials' views.
The National Convention of the American GI Forum in Albuquerque is expected to draw about 1,000 delegates for today's opening session.
Senator Danglade announces Senate passage of a bill to let New Mexico voters decide next year on relaxing rules for investing permanent school funds. The measure, already passed by the House, would allow investments in bonds stocks and other securities subject to a constitutional amendment.
The Open Range Cowboy Association will hold its annual reunion on Saturday September 7 at the Lea County Fair Building in Lovington. A relieved prisoner walked from the state penitentiary with 25 dollars in his pocket. David Washburn, released on a writ of Habeas Corpus after a 10 year sentence, said goodbye to Warden T. M. Woodruff and left no immediate plans. The judge ruled his waiver of counsel at trial had not been used intelligently.
Johnny Young of 1406 E Main Hobbs died at Meadows Home Las Vegas at age 61. Born in Henderson Texas he is survived by three daughters Geneva Austin Opal Marshall and Margene Brooks all of Hobbs one son Morris Young of Hobbs and brother Landis Young of San Francisco. Body at Green Chapel Funeral Home. Final rites at Ebenezer Baptist Church Sunday at 11 a.m. Rev Frank Wells to officiate.
