Edwin Michael Gaudet a former New Orleans policeman sought for threatening President Nixon has agreed to surrender to federal agents in Taos New Mexico Taos County Sheriff Arthur Trujillo said Gaudet who fled after an Aug 15 threat was traced to a commune in the Sangre de Cristo Mountains and later shot at deputies before vanishing his wife and cousin convinced him to turn himself in separate reports note the Secret Service had sought his surrender for the alleged threat.
Senator Montoya announced that the Benito Baca Herman Goodman House in Tucumcari built in 1905 by Benito Baca and later owned by Herman Goodman will be entered in the National Register of Historic Places. The register notes nominations are made after state surveys and review committees assess historical significance.
Student pilot John Watson 23 tried for first solo landing at Municipal Airport but suffered engine trouble and missed the runway. He landed on Sardis Avenue, a wing hit a light pole, sending the plane into a driveway and crumpling near a house, stopping within a foot of the residence.
Richard M Johnson, 35, of Hobbs New Mexico, was arrested by IRS agents and indicted by a federal grand jury in Albuquerque on four counts for willfully filing false joint income tax returns. The charges allege understatements of adjusted gross income of 931,703 in 1967 and 13,313 in 1968. He is held on 20,000 dollars bond.
The eastern plains expect thundershowers mainly in the north and will spread to areas through Thursday. Temperatures remain steady with Clovis 66-97, Tucumcari 65-98, Artesia 64-96, Lovington 66-94. In the central mountains and south central valleys, scattered showers and thundershowers persist with little temperature change. Santa Fe 54-89, Las Cruces 68-97.
Hobbs New Mexico police chief RaeD. Neal resigned Tuesday to become Rapid City South Dakota chief. City Manager Joe Harvey said the resignation takes effect around Sept. 1. Neal, 45, has served since Sept. 1 last year at a salary of 12360 dollars. Andrew J. Palmer named acting chief.
Nina Mathews 52 died at home at 4 50 AM after her husband Clyde failed to wake her for medicine for a heart condition. Neighbors called for an ambulance. Coroner Dr W H Pruitt ruled natural causes. Funeral services were to be held at George Price Funeral Home in Levelland Texas.
A Cost of Living Council official and an economist foresee beef prices leveling off after the freeze ends next month. Henry Perritt says withholding could flood the market in September, while James O Bray of the Stanford Research Institute expects cattle availability to rise and beef prices to decline by year-end. Other foods may rise as consumers have less money to spend on beef.
City commissioners tabled a decision on buying a new fire truck after negotiations with John Bean Company trimmed the estimate to 29300 dollars. Fire Chief Wayne Benson led the price reduction while the commission debated bid validity and vehicle specifications.
