Seven-Year-Old Lovington Boy Struck By Encephalitis
A seven year old Lovington boy, Matt Runnels, was diagnosed with encephalitis after a fever spiked at 105. He is at Lubbock Memorial Hospital and expected to stay about two more weeks. County health officer Carl Crutchfield notes it is Lovington’s first encephalitis case in four years as mosquitoes remain less numerous.

Lubbock Man Hurt Falling 36 Feet At Lovington Mill Site
Richard L. Pirty, 29, of Lubbock, was critically injured when a bar gave way and he fell 36 feet while guiding his brother around a steel storage tank at Campbell Grain & Milling Co. in Lovington. He was taken to Lovington General Hospital after the 5:10 p.m. accident. Dorman Pirty sustained a leg injury but was not seriously hurt.

Cadillac Fire Near Hagerman Ends in Explosion
A 1956 Cadillac owned by California resident C Wright Mitchell of Pacoima burned after a overheated wheel bearing ignited the tire and caused the gas tank to explode. Mitchell, en route to Hobbs to visit relatives, survived as the car was destroyed. State police investigator M J Payne reported the blaze.

Woman Dies In Wreck Near Tatum
A Clovis woman Virginia Elizabeth Russ 64 diedTuesday afternoon when her 1953 Chevrolet failed to negotiate a curve 2.5 miles north of Tatum on State Highway 18. The car left the road 378 feet in the ditch overturned en route to Lovington. She died of head injuries. the car was a total loss.
