Taos New Mexico lawmen and two Secret Service agents hunt Edwin Gaudet a former New Orleans policeman after he opened fire on pursuing officers near Arroyo Hondo. He denied intent to use office for reelection and noted possible future involvement on the State Supreme Court.
New Mexico Highway Commission members will convene Thursday in Hobbs at the Holiday Inn for a 9 a.m. public meeting. The Hobbs Chamber of Commerce hosts a cocktail hour and buffet dinner the night before at the same hotel.
Lovington schools reported 2,733 students enrolled yesterday, slightly above the 2,725 projection. Superintendent Larry Crouse noted that average daily membership will determine funding, with a daily headcount around 2,750 needed to meet the target. A Friday count was planned as crews track kindergarten and special education totals alongside grade distributions. The board also approved most school zone transfers to balance junior high enrollment between Central and Taylor.
Clovis and nearby districts faced beef shortages as school cafeterias shift to non beef menus. Superintendent reports suppliers unable to fulfill bids while Clovis bought five live cattle to cover six weeks. Senator Frank E Moss of Utah urged a massive realignment of the oil industry into a competitive framework. He said major oil companies control production, refining and distribution and urged divestiture to restore competition. He blaming lack of a coherent national energy policy for the fuel shortage.
Funeral services were held for Buster S. Tidwell 57 at 10 a m at Smith Rogers Chapel. Tidwell of 709 South First Street died Sunday from natural causes. he was a WWII veteran and Wallace Oil employee. Interment in Lovington Cemetery. Survivors include wife mother sister and three brothers and one son.
Frank Kidd Services Web reports 33 year old Tommy Frank Kidd of Lovington drowned after a boat accident at Lake McMillan near Artesia. Witnesses say Kidd stood up to show Billy Ray Smith operating the motor, fell overboard, and despite a long search over 100 people, authorities and rescue teams recovered the body Sunday afternoon. Funeral set for Wednesday at Smith Rogers Funeral Home Chapel with interment in Resthaven Cemetery. He is survived by his wife Carriejo, two sons, his father, and two sisters. Casketbearers listed.
Mrs Kenneth Matlick mother of Mrs Dale Ridenour of Lay ington died Monday at Kingswood West Virginia Funeral services set for Thursday August 23 with Kiger Williams Funeral Home Kingwood in charge Mrs Ridenour and her son Ken left Monday to attend services.
