Lea County Expected Big Cotton Harvest In 1957
Lea County farmers anticipate a bumper crop from 28 816 acres planted mainly from Hobbs to the Tatum area with a projected 45 000 bales or more and a base price of 34 73 cents per pound for middling cotton. Wandering artist plans explosion to fake death
Milton J. Turner, a wandering artist, was committed to a state mental hospital for observation after a failed plan to dynamite his car so his wife would believe he had died. He claimed he acted because he had no job or place for her to stay and hoped the car would not be found quickly. The four sticks of dynamite failed when the car toppled off a cliff near Rowe. Turner was found in an abandoned cabin near Sands. State police expected charges of illegal possession of explosives.

Emma Hicks Granted Parole in 1954 Case
Emma Hicks of Hobbs was granted parole at the August meeting of the State Parole Board. Twelve other prisoners received parole and 24 were denied or cases were deferred.
