County clerk Effie Haldiman reports public frustration as Senate Bill 40 creates a 72 hour window for marriage licenses. The counting rules exclude the first day and include the last unless it falls on Sunday, pushing some couples to wait days and even weekends before obtaining a license.
Cecil B. McPherson age 41 died early Saturday at Lovington Lea General Hospital after 16 years in the area. A past president of the Lea County Farm and Livestock Bureau he served four years in World War I with two and a half years in combat. Services set for 2 p m Monday at Northside Baptist Church with burial in Lovington Cemetery.
An isolated Navajo band on the 52000 acre Almose Reservation 35 miles NW of Magdalena Socorro County will gain electricity this week. Socorro Electric Cooperative financed the Rural Electrification Administration loan. Dedication Saturday will be attended by Asst. Agriculture Secretary John A Baker Gov. David F Cargo and Navajo Tribal Chairman Raymond Nakai with Vice President Hubert Humphrey addressing by telephone.
Army National Guard and Reserve officers may enroll in Common Subjects again at the 4153rd ARSD Albuquerque USAR School with a new command and general staff college course taught by Maj. Harvey Markley. Classes start next month. for information call 396-3900 Lovington. County Commissioners meet Tuesday to hear claims cash and budget reports review typewriter bids printing office supplies light bulbs and other items. They will consider an airport lease A C Holder a pipeline crossing permit C-100A and receive a road operational report. Meeting is in the County Manager's office County Courthouse at 9 am.
The Judicial System Study Committee urged a discussion on bills limiting special deputy sheriff commissions. Proposed rules would hold sheriffs liable for deputies actions, require identification card specifics and expiration dates, and promote statewide card uniformity. The push follows a Bernalillo County kidnapping tied to a deputy during a traffic stop and a later fatal arrest. Training and a state police academy were urged, ideally in Roswell at Walker Air Force Base. Some advisors suggested ending the elected sheriff position to improve continuity.
Two wrecks were reported to the Lea County sheriff's office Friday and Saturday. A 1966 Chevrolet driven by Betty Law Biersch wab of Lovington rolled over two miles west of the Border Bar. she was uninjured and the car was towed to Lovington. A second wreck occurred Saturday morning when a camper trailer overturned eight miles west of Lovington after the hitch detached, damaging the trailer top. the car was a 1965 Ford Fairlane station wagon driven by John M. Nolte of Decatur Illinois. The Lovington City Commission will hold a short meeting Tuesday night at 7 to read minutes and handle routine business.
In Albuquerque a convention of Spanish-American land grant members led to sharp accusations against the United States. Reies Lopez Tijerina called a woman a prostitute and rejected U S policies while the group formed the Federal Alliance of Free City States. He planned court action with attorney Melvin Bel1i.
Lovington Parents and Booster Club schedules a Monday 7 pm gathering at the football field to watch boys practice. After practice the group moves to the Vocal Music Building with George Blackard for the meeting and ticket distribution. President Kinman urges attendance and previews of junior teams.
Over 40 Moran Oil Producing and Drilling Company employees attended New Mexico Junior College for the first drilling well pressure control school in New Mexico. The twelve hour course, sponsored by Moran Oil and conducted through UT Petroleum Extension Service, covers blowout prevention with the Carmody Trainer and gas bubble simulators. The program includes lectures, slides, tape recordings, and an instructional manual, with a second week scheduled at NMJC and additional courses offered at five Basin locations.
