Clyde A Browning of Lovington joins about 2 000 non unit reservists for a two week refresher course at Fort Chaffee Arkansas The 95th Division largest of 13 training divisions will mobilize up to 14 000 men in an emergency The camp ends August 27 with soldiers returning home.
Vice President Lyndon Johnson landed in Bonn then Berlin vowing no retreat in the Berlin crisis. He announced 1,500 battle trained U.S. soldiers would reach Berlin by motor convoy, boosting the 5,000 strong American garrison. Britain and France pledged reinforcements.
Local delegates to a 40 state Jehovahs Witnesses gathering in Oklahoma City return urging increased door to door teaching locally. Lovington congregation presiding minister Lawton H. Greene says 18 area delegates attended the six day congress ending last Sunday. Nathan H. Knorr urged world unity under Gods Kingdom and warned nations will be ruined without it.
NASA said it would focus resources on placing an American astronaut into Earth orbit, abandoning suborbital flights. The program aims to have a man around the earth soon, test a robot capsule, then launch a chimpanzee, followed by a manned mission toward a Moon landing by 1970.
Funeral services for Wilbert Lee Conner of 206 N. Chaves St. will be at 2 p m Monday at the Church of God in Christ with Rev. W. C. Griffin and Rev. Erwin Berry officiating. Burial will be in Lovington Cemetery. Conner, born May 18 1941 in Texas, was found dead Thursday at 3 30 p m in a trailer behind his home. He is survived by his parents Mr. and Mrs. Roosevelt Pope of 206 N. Chaves St. Smith-Yarbro Funeral Home is in charge.
Mudkey Lynch, a member of the Leader Staff since July 10 and a senior journalism student at Eastern New Mexico University, will serve as staff reporter for the Portales News-Tribune during the coming school term.
Lovington Chamber of Commerce announces the Annual Agriculture Tour on August 25 starting at 8 a.m. with plans for at least 100 businessmen. Participants will visit local farms and ranches, view improvements in livestock feeding cotton and grain sorghum crops soil conservation and related efforts, followed by a barbecue lunch at the Cotton Warehouse Inc.
The Lea County Chambers of Commerce will operate an information booth at the Lea County Fair in Lovington from September 6 to 9. Chambers from Lovington Hobbs Eunice Jal and Tatum provide directions and help to fair visitors and county residents. Lovington Chamber manager Joe Meador invites all to use the service.

Police in five states sought a 33 year old woman and her two children in connection with the double slaying of J R King and his son Carl King in Grants New Mexico. The victims were found shot in the trailer they shared with Mrs King and the children. Authorities believe both men were killed inside the trailer and moved. A burned mattress and moccasin prints suggested a light female shooter. The hunt covered five states and a possible route toward Arkansas.
James Odle of Tatum completed the August graduation at Highlands University. He earned a Master of Science degree in a ceremony on Friday August 18 at Ilfeld Auditorium. The class of 144 boasted 92 master candidates, a school record. Commencement speaker was Dr Stephen Romine dean of education at the University of Colorado.
Loevington housewife and part time grocery clerk Mrs. Robert Shields of 1014 W Tyler won the Ad-Rime for the week ending August 19 in the Lovington Leader contest. Her entry Buy or just investigate Let local products demonstrate earned $10. The ad time judges the top entry from 26 weeks for a final $50 prize. This week is No 22.
