Police Chief J Robinson released a traffic survey showing 4616 vehicles crossed the West Avenue D and 9 Street corner over 16 hours with 1474 into town and 1324 westbound. He says school opening will raise volumes and urges highway lights after a Santa Fe visit promising a future survey.
Shell Oil Company confirms its confidence in the Southern Rockies as a major oil region with a new exploration and land division headquarters in Durango Colorado. The Four Corners area will host a large portion of operations complementing Shell’s Farmington production division established last spring. Donald W. Gresser leads the exploration division and Frederick W. Nanther heads the land division. both are from Durango.
City fathers meet at 7 30 p m to review minutes pay bills and hear bids. Bid openings include pump houses for new well pumps and a welding machine for the water department with broad departmental use. Managers observations and routine items complete the agenda.
A first aid course planning meeting was held at Jal for women of Jal No 1 in El Paso. Ten women attended with Glen Estes as instructor. The next meeting is set for Tuesday morning next week.
Evelyn Colbert was shot in the lower abdomen at the Hilburn farm west of town. Wesley Vaughn, her father, is charged with assault with a deadly weapon as authorities link the New Mexico incident to two prior .22 killings in the county. Ballard Baley, J D Cantrell, and two women died in similar shootings this summer. Cisneros is to stand trial September 13 for the Baley case.
United Press reports London critic Bernard McElwaine of the Sunday Pictorial says horror films now top the box office, with the aging appeal of Marilyn Monroe, Jayne Mansfield and Sophia Loren fading as monsters and ghoul plots draw audiences. He notes semi censored clinches remain acceptable but the real draw is shock and gore.
An irrigation field day will be held August 27 at the New Mexico A&M College substation northeast of Tucumcari. Attendees will inspect irrigation research plants and Fred W. Carpenter of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service will present a gopher trapping demonstration.
A 69 year old Jewish Rabbi, Julius Leibert, has left San Quentin State Prison after three years as chaplain. He also served at Folsom and Alcatraz, saying the role felt futile and that convicts belong in hospitals, not jails, and urging law changes to treat criminals as mentally and emotionally ill. He praised officials while criticizing the law.

In Oswego New Mexico a six thousand foot tunnel beneath Lake Erie collapsed during a dynamite prep. Three workers trapped by fumes died after eight hours of rescue efforts. Two men escaped as authorities blamed a premature booster charge while air was pumped into the tunnel. A separate daylight bank robbery occurred at Lea County State Bank in Hobbs where a lone bandit escaped after forcing three employees into a washroom and vault. The suspect, described as 5 9 to 5 11, Latin, wearing a straw hat and sunglasses, fled in a light Chevrolet. FBI involvement followed.
The government proposes a method to estimate lint cotton yield by counting bolls on 1/100 acre under specific conditions. It assumes the crop is cotton and uses a USDA formula to estimate exact lint output, ignoring losses from hail or rain. The rule hinges on identifying the plant variety and timing the count to match the average acre yield for 22 upland varieties.
Joe L. Green aged 19 was moved from Griffin Funeral Home Hobbs to Odessa for burial after dying in an oil well fire incident. He worked as a truck driver for B J Well Servicing, recently married to Maurine Sandridge, and planned to return to Texas Christian University this fall. He was a 1955 Odessa High School graduate and former football manager. He is survived by his parents, widow, and grandparents.
The State Game and Fish Department announced fall waterfowl seasons. Goose season runs Nov 17 to Jan 15, 1958 with a bag limit of six and two Canadian geese or one Canadian and one white-feathered goose. Duck and coot seasons run Nov 2 to Jan 15 with a five per day bag and ten possession. Rails Gallinules Nov 2 to Jan 10 with an aggregate limit of 15 or 15 per species. Wilson’s Snipe Nov 2 to Dec 1 with a bag of eight. Resident license $4, non-resident $15.25. Both require a $2 federal duck stamp sold at post offices.
The Senate Racket Committee heard that Teamsters president Dave Beck approved seven charters forming phony locals in New York. Einar Mohn testified Hoffa requested the charters to influence a New York City Teamsters election. He admitted the charters violated the union's 1955 agreement requiring New York council approval.
Ford announces the Edsel will use aluminum at 39 percent above the year’s average. Reynolds Metals says the car will have aluminum front wheel brakes, signaling a major weight and performance shift.
Assistant Adjutant General Armando Nasci says false vouchers were submitted to cover National Guard convention expenses in 1955 and 1956. Nasci says he cashed state warrants and gave funds to ex-Adj. Gen. Sage who resigned under fire. Liet. Colp. offers access to Adjutant General records to aid investigators.
Major David Simons, a 34 year old Air Force doctor, soared to about 100000 feet nearly 19 miles up in a record balloon flight. He launched from an iron mine shaft near Crosby Minnesota and aimed to land near Miles City Montana today after reaching within six miles of outer space.
Washington report says GOP leaders told President Eisenhower they will press for a stronger civil rights bill even if Congress stays in session past September. House leader Joe Martin hopes for compromise on an effective bill, while Knowland cites needed breaks to adjourn by August 31 amid liberal Southern opposition.
State Patrolman investigated the traffic death of a cow near Mallamar after Artie C. Vowell, 43, of Mallamar, struck the bovine on a hill road with a 1956 Pontiac. The cow died in the crash, Vowell’s car suffered about $1,400 in damage, and Taylor Holdman Ranch lost one cow.
New Mexico cattle herds remain free of anthrax while brucellosis cases total 549 for the year through July. Dona Ana County leads July with 15 cases, including 13 in dairy herds. Only 14 of 32 counties reported new brucellosis cases.
Washington reports that U.S. Flag vessels will transport at least half of the cargo under the new commodities agreement between the United States and partner nations. The arrangement aims to boost domestic shipping and secure key supplies.
James Hoffa, star witness at the rackets hearing, told the Senate Rackets Committee he will refuse to answer questions he considers outside its authority. Hoffa, poised to become Teamsters Union president next month, brushed aside a reporter asking if he would invoke the Fifth Amendment.
Lovington police report a sharp drop in speeding after installing a new speed timer. On South Main in four hours no violators were found. highest recorded speed was 34 mph. North Main and West Jackson also showed strong compliance with warnings and few citations. Police say the device has achieved the goal of slowing traffic even if no fines are collected.
Funeral services for Clifford Eugene Cox 18 months old proceed at 3 p.m. Wednesday at St John Baptist Church Hobbs with interment at Everglade Cemetery. He died Sunday in Seminole Texas at 11 70 am. Grandparents Mr and Mrs Willie Robinson and C W Mitchell and sister Barbara Ann Mitchell attend.
The House approved a bill mandating federal inspection of poultry meat. The compromise measure now moves to the Senate for final action.
Parkview Elementary at 1400 South Sixth Street is under construction with completion slated for November. Students assigned to Parkview will attend Old Central starting in September.
The Lea County Fair runs September 11 to 15 with daily judging of sheep poultry beef and swine. Events include Home Economics entries deadlines at 12 noon September 11 a parade on Thursday and a visitors day carnival activities through Sunday morning cleanup ends by 10 am.
Police warn of a thief who stole an 18 inch teakwood and ivory handled dagger from the home of an Indonesian official in New York. The weapon allegedly carries poisonous herbs and could cause a fatal scratch. The dagger belonged to the deputy chief of the Indonesian supply ministry and was described as a family religious object.
Naval Aviation Cadet Bobbie K. Brodie of Lovington is undergoing all weather fighter and jet pilot training at the Naval Auxiliary Air Station in Kingsville Texas. Before reporting June 5 he completed basic and pre flight training at Pensacola Florida. Cadet Brodie attended Texas Tech prior to service.
Lovington police report 32 speeding tickets from the August 11 timer. only one driver failed to appear and the ticket was voided. By Friday City Judge Reese Greaves had heard 30 of the cases, all for speeding, leaving newer tickets pending. Four juveniles faced JP court for driving too fast.
The USDA revokes a 1958 Soil Bank regulation provis ion that would have imposed civil penalties beyond forfeiture of the payment for exceeding promised harvest acreage. Under the change, noncompliant farmers forfeit the entire payment but face no additional penalties.
