Philip Larragotte of the New Mexico Association of Counties warned that appointive sheriffs might produce Gestapo like rule, while Sheriff Tom Nord urged four year terms with no limit as delegates debated the constitutional field.
Two UNM faculty groups urge President Ferrel Heady to keep about 700 undistributed copies of New Mexico Quarterly from destruction. Regents halted distribution over controversial words. Heady has kept remaining copies in safekeeping while reviews proceed.
The Re Report shows Lea County oil rigs rising from 28 last week to 34 this week. Permian Basin data indicate a mid-30s rig count with a six-rig increase over the past seven days.
Festus Haggen star of Gune Sqgoke arrives tonight at Hobbs airport via separate flights from Kentucky, while his wife Torrie comes from Los Angeles arriving at 7 49. The two are welcomed by Fair and Rodeo officials and locals as Lovington gears up for a record rodeo and Lea County Fair week.
Texas attorney Ed Pritchard representing Pritchard and Abbott told Lea County commissioners industrial plants, including gasoline facilities, are underassessed. He noted several plants are worth millions yet taxed at 100000 to 300000, urging higher valuations after a county reappraisal.
College of the Southwest opens fall registration August 27 to 29 with registrar Inez Livergood stating classes begin September 2. Testing for new students set for August 27 at 8 a.m. Courses include English Shakespeare, American literature, Bible as literature, and education methods among others.
The New Mexico state board of health and social services will take final action on air pollution control regulations at a special meeting in Santa Fe Friday at 10 a.m. The rules, drafted after months of study, would take effect 30 days after filing with the Supreme Court to implement the 1967 air pollution control law.
Workers in short supply are needed in several positions at the Lovington office of the New Mexico State Employment Service led by manager Robert Bolin. Open roles include baker derrickman irrigators kitchen helper laundry maid horsemaid porters public health workers rouse tabouts sandblaster sanitation worker waitress and yardman. Lovington forecast calls for fair Tuesday with afternoon cloudiness on Wednesday. A slight chance of a brief late afternoon thunder shower on Wednesday. High near 105 and a low around 70. New Mexico stays clear to partly cloudy Tuesday and Wednesday with widely scattered afternoon and evening thundershowers mainly in the mountains.
Santa Fe AP. Constitutional Convention delegate Max Coll of Roswell released a 1200 word rewrite of the taxation article. It includes voter approval of tax increases, a tax incentive for new industries, and tighter church tax exemptions with limits on state aid to private schools. The draft, for discussion only, requires a majority of taxed voters or a three fourths legislative vote for any tax change. It preserves the 20 mill property tax limit and applies to state and local taxes.
W D Brewer federal cochair of the Four Corners Regional Commission criticized early news of his resignation. He had asked the SBA deputy director appointment be kept until he could announce at the Farmington commission meeting, but Washington officials confirmed the move last week.
Twenty new faculty members will join Lovington Schools as the Pre School Workshop begins on Wednesday. Six are graduates of Lovington High School. one is not pictured. Jo Bob Trout earned a B S from Eastern New Mexico University and will teach physics basic electricity and mathematics at the high school.
