Tractor Driver Killed in Highway 18 Crash

A 63 year old Tatum man, Riley William Pate, died after his tractor was struck from behind by a 1964 pick up driven by Manuel Hobbs three miles north of the State Roads 18 and 337 junction. Dale McLemore age 24 had minor injuries. investigation by State Policeman Jerry Bell continues. Funeral services set for Tatum Baptist Church with burial in Tatum Cemetery tomorrow at 2:00 p.m. Winters officiating.

Campout Ends In Wagon Fire Blaze In Colorado

Francis Sudeholt his wife and seven children from St. Louis were touring Colorado when brake trouble caused a wagon fire. A wheel caught fire, the father tried to beat it out with a pillow, and the gas tank exploded destroying the wagon on scenic Colorado Highway 96 leaving a nine member family stranded.

House OKs 3.36 Billion Foreign Aid Bill

The House approved a compromise 3.36 billion dollar foreign aid bill by a 243 to 150 vote. It extends the program for one year and sends the measure to the Senate, which is expected to act Monday. Republicans protested that the bill permits indirect aid to North Vietnam.

Marines win major Viet Nam battle near Chu Lai

UPI reports U S Marines killed about 550 Viet Cong and captured 50 guerrillas in a fierce fight 12 miles south of Chu Lai. The spokesman called it the war’s biggest operational success though Marines suffered their heaviest casualties of a single action. Supplies and weapons were seized and cleanup aims to finish tonight with civilians returning to safety. Separate clashes in Kontum and near Saigon left additional casualties.

Auto Mishap In Lovington In Front Of Residence

Lovington police cited Donald Wayne Shumard of 81 West E for driving without a license after his 1965 Ford 34 ton truck backing from a driveway collided with a parked 1964 Plymouth owned by Joseph Casimir Gooch of El Paso Texas. Damages to the Plymouth were about $150. the truck had no damage.
